Maybe postnasal drip: Mild nasal allergies can cause some muscus dripping in back of throat/mouth and collects there during sleep and can turn a bit brown in the am. During day, little mucus/drip is pulled down by gravity, but when sleeping mucus tends to stay in back of throat and thus productive coughing/coughing in the early am. If worsens, call doc for eval. Need diagnosis...: If you are describing a cough productive of mucous that has been present for 5 years, you need to see a doctor for evaluation, likely including pulmonary function testing, in order to diagnose the etiology of this cough. Possibilities....: The possible etiologies for a chronic cough productive of mucous includes bronchospasm from any etiology, post-nasal drip, gerd or a combination of factors. You need to see your doctor so your cough can be diagnosed and then treated. You may need additional testing to diagnose this cough but there are effective therapies so see your doctor. It can be: Physicians are getting away from focusing on the color of phlegm although sometimes it can be helpful. If you were diagnosed with a sinus infection it can be clear, yellow, green or bloody. If they prescribed treatment I would use all the medicines and if worsening get rechecked.
