Hello.: Hello. This is being answered by a psychiatrist. I reviewed literature to provide this answer and am not an expert on the subject. The nuchal fold is fluid that collects under the skin of back of the baby's neck. In babies who have increased amounts of fluid there can be an association with chromsomal abnormalities. Several sites indicated that the normal range was between 5-6 at 18-20 weeks. Take care. ...Read more

My wife age 28 is 20 week pregnant, had nuchal fold 6.7 mm but all other screening normal, is there any complication in the baby?

Nuchal fold: The thickness of the nuchal fold, the skin overlying the back of the neck, measured early in pregnancy has been found to be a soft marker for Down's syndrome. ...Read more

My wife (29) is 20 week pregnant, her all down syndrome screening is normal other than nuchal fold (6.7mm), is there any complication?

My wife (29) is 20 week pregnant, her all down syndrome screening is normal other than nuchal fold (6.7mm), is there any complication?

Down's Syndrome: At 29, there is diminished risk of Down's Syndrome, and a "nuchal fold of 6.7 mm." is not diagnostic of Down's. There exist other tests (amniocentesis with tests for chromosome abnormalities) which can confirm whether Down's is present, but you should consult your OB to make that decision, since there are risks to amniocentesis, although not frequent ones. ...Read more

My 3yr old has very prominent bilat neck veins, constant, not just when crying/exercising. Fit & well. Nuchal fold 4.7 in utero but normal foetal echo?

Careful cardiac exam: What you describe CAN be perfectly normal but to be sure please take your son to the pediatrician and point the veins out. If he were my patient I would be performing a thorough cardiac exam and possibly ordering an echocardiogram to look for any condition that might be causing pulmonary hypertension ...Read more

I have just had my 20 week scan and the nuchal fold was 6.3mm, does this mean my baby has downs?

No: The nuchal fold was developed to be assessed at 11-13 weeks, not 20. Even when it is increased, it doesn't mean the baby the baby has down's, just that there is increased risk it could. ...Read more

My 20 week scan said that my nuchal fold is at 7mm. I am super worried now that the baby might have downs. Is 7mm super bad?

Nuchal fold: A nuchal fold of 7 is a little on the large side, it is not super bad and it needs to be combined with other testing to be a true indicator. Are those other tests available? ...Read more

Antenatal screening: Hi the nuchal fold thickness is only part of the antenatal screening...it is important to use the bloodwork along with the NT to evaluate your risk factors for genetic problems. ...Read more

See your OBGYN: This is too complex of an issue to answer. The nuchal fold measurement is performed to screen for certain inherited disorders, such as down syndrome. The measurements need to be compared to other factors such as maternal age and gestational age. Please see your obgyn for a clear answer. ...Read more

Just had my 20 week scan, nuchal fold measured at 6.4 mm, and the doctor saw a choroid plexus cyst. Should we be worried. First trimester negative.

Choroid plexus cyst: The finding of a choroid plexus cyst in ultrasound scans in pregnancy is very common and most resolve over time. A repeat ultrasound in a month or two may show that the cyst has "disappeared". If you have more questions, consult a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, but your concern should be minimal. ...Read more

I had my 20wk ultrasound. They told me that she had a mild increase in nuchal fold. Quad screen was negative. Could my baby have down syndrome? Worried

See below: First off, it's very easy and common to make the nuchal fold look big when it really isn't, so that's the good news. Bad news is that if it truly is thickened, it is concerning. A nuchal fold over 6 mm increases the risk of down's by 17 times. So divide your quad screen results by that for true risk. Again, if truly large, would consider an amniocentesis. Could also get a level 2 us to confirm. ...Read more

Interpreting results: It is best to have her go over the results with the ordering physician. It is best not to look at single measurements in isolation from the the clinical history. Nuchal translucency is measured during this gestation and combines with hormonal blood testing as part of the first trimester genetic screening. ...Read more

My wife just had a nuchal measurement on our baby, measuring 4.2mm. Is this a red flag or can it end up being fine?

More testing needed.: Unfortunately a nuchal translucency that is greater than 3.5 millimeters would be considered abnormal, however it does not tell the complete story of the pregnancy. More testing would be needed to correlate the risk of a fetal anomaly with this ultrasound finding, such as a fetal cell free DNA blood test. Consult more with your doctor, however this finding alone is not enough. Best of luck ...Read more

My nuchal ultrasound came back as a measurement of 2.1mm of the neck at 13w2d. Is this bad/?

It's average/normal: An ultrasound is often done at the end of the 1st trimester, between 11 and 14 weeks, to assess thickness of fluid which has collected at the nape of the fetal neck. Your result is normal. Fetuses with some chromosomal abnormalities including Down Syndrome have greater nuchal thicknesses. This ultrasound can also help assess the age of the fetus. Good luck! ...Read more

Need test results: 1st trimester screening is not done simply by ultrasound. The sonogram is done along with blood work. Is 2mm a normal nuchal translucency at 13 weeks pregnant?

See below: The short answer is yes, it is within normal. However, it is a bit more complicated than that. The NT is one factor in assessing the risk of having a chromosomal abnormality. If you are 22 years old with an NT of 2 mm, you would get a different risk than a 45 yr old with an NT of 2 mm. There are other factors as well and the data is combined with blood work. ...Read more

I am 13 weeks pregnant and went for an nuchal translucency, which came out at 2.2mm in thickness which the doctor said is thicker than normal?

Not that simple: Nt scan is one of many screening tests used to assess for risk of a major chromosomal abnormality. There is a range of "normal" that has been established by scanning thousands of pregnancies. As with any screening test, a cutoff is chosen somewhat arbitrarily based on statistics. Most studies use a cutoff of 2.5 or 3.0 for "abnormal." NT is combined with blood tests to determine overall risk. ...Read more

What is the definition or description of: ultrasound for nuchal translucency?

Nuchal Translucency: Nuchal Translucency is a screening test to determine risk of chromosome abnormalities in a fetus. When the NT is greater than 3.5 mm, there is a 1 in 5 chance of a chromosome abnormality such as Turner or Down syndrome, or Trisomy 18. Additional tests should be ordered by an OB or genetic counselor for confirmation. A mother may decide to continue or end of the pregnancy based on the information. ...Read more

Why do I have to have an amniocentesis and not a nuchal scan to check for down's?

Why do I have to have an amniocentesis and not a nuchal scan to check for down's?

Diagnosis/Screening: The nuchal fold measurement is a marker for Down syndrome and is used in screening algorithms to assess risk for downs. However, it is not a diagnostic test. The diagnostic test to definitively tell if you are carrying a baby with Down syndrome is the amnio or cvs depending on gestational age. These test collect fetal cells that can then have the chromosomes counted. ...Read more
