What are the causes of normal A1c and high fasting glucose?

What are the causes of normal A1c and high fasting glucose?

Several causes: The correlation between a1c and FBS is not perfect. A1c is like a glu average. If you have frequent hypoglycemia, then that may be "balancing" the high glu. Another possibility is a hemoglobinopathy. There are many causes of abnormal hemoglobin, most common is sickle trait, which cause no symptoms but mess up the a1c. An alternate to the a1c is a measure of fructosamine. ...Read more

Had blood test amylase 64 of 90u/l normal & lipase 67 of 13-60 u/l normal range . Ultrasound normal , pancreatitis? Feel gastric after day of alcohol

Had blood test amylase 64 of 90u/l normal & lipase 67 of 13-60 u/l normal range . Ultrasound normal , pancreatitis? Feel gastric after day of alcohol

Those are close: to the normal range and not necessarily a problem. cannot say in your particular case, but generally, tests that are within 5% of the normal range are not indicative of much. Furthermore alcohol certainly causes damage to the pancreas and some drinking can cause some (small) changes in lab tests at levels below that causing serious toxicity. ...Read more

Is it normal to have normal glucose levels while having a high hemoglobin A1c level?

Is it normal to have normal glucose levels while having a high hemoglobin A1c level?

Different: Pretend a glucose level is like taking a snapshot in one point in time. The hemoglobin A1c is like viewing a movie over time. So you could have high glucose over time and have one reading, ie the glucose that is normal. ...Read more

Is an mean plasma glucose of 136 with an a1c 6.0 within normal range>?

Slightly eleváted la: I don't know if your glucose was a fasting level or not. If it was a fasting level it was slightly elevated. The Hgb A1c meàsures long term glucose control and should be below 5,7. So these tests both indicate that you have issues with glycemic control. ...Read more

Are hemoglobin A1c levels related to glucose levels?

Are hemoglobin A1c levels related to glucose levels?

Diabetic measure.: The HgbA1C is a measure reflective of your degree of diabetic control in the long term. It essentially represents a three month average of your fingersticks, as if you took a fingerstick every minute, night and day, eating and fasting, for three months straight and then averaged them all. Technically, it's the percentage of red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. ...Read more

1.44 billirubin which is apparently slightly high. Enzymes and rest of liver functions all normal. AFP norma. CBC normal. What to think?

1.44 billirubin which is apparently slightly high. Enzymes and rest of liver functions all normal. AFP norma. CBC normal. What to think?

Need to examine: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, if bilirubin is only abnormal result, you may watch and wait. If you have no symptoms. Do not use Tylenol (acetaminophen) and related meds, no alcohol and you may repeat it in a year or so. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. Get HPV vaccine. ...Read more

Normal hb and normal wbc, normal platelet , slightly low RBC 4.4 ( range is 4.5-5.11) is this considered normal ?

Normal hb and normal wbc, normal platelet , slightly low RBC 4.4 ( range is 4.5-5.11) is this considered normal ?

Lab variation: This is usually not alarming. It is usually considered lab variation. Most of the time the ordering physician considers the reason they ordered the test, and decides if the variation has any significance in relation to that reason. If so, then they sometimes re-order at a future date to see if it indicates a certain directional trend. ...Read more

Blood pressure reading of 120/50 is this normal also thyroid blood results TSH 0.21 and Free T4 is 19.3.. are these now within 'normal' range ?

Looks okay: If you feel okay, there is no such thing as "low blood pressure"; it need be only high enough to keep your body perfused. Whether these thyroid labs are okay depends on the units. Reference ranges are arbitrarily set so that several percent of healthies fall outside. Glad you're staying proactive. BEst wishes. ...Read more

Homework?: This is more than we can handle in 400 words, you know reference ranges are set so several % of healthies fall outside, that all well-muscled men have "high creatinine" and that labs mean nothing apart from people. This said, (1) healthy bodybuilder, people on Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or Tagamet, others; (2) dehydration, after big steak dinner. Try to understand the basic biology instead of just lists. ...Read more
