Is it safe to take my 13 mo child to her swim class (indoor) if she has a 101-102 fever? She has had it for less than 24 hrs and all behavior normal

No: One should not exercise while he/she has fever. Fever is a sign the body is fighting an infection. Also, the immune system may be suppressed while one has a fever & a swimming pool is often an area for exposure to bacteria and viruses. Thus, let your daughter rest until her temp has been normal for 24 hours. If I can be of help, then join my care team at www.healthtap.com/dr-clarkeholmes ...Read more

Six mo. old's urine smells strongly- just being near her- of vitamins, is this normal? Urine is clear, she drinks and wets a lot, no fever.

Probably normal: If she is taking vitamins it can cause a strong odor and color to urine but I would suggest having her provider check a urinalysis and culture just to be sure. Continue to keep her well hydrated as well. ...Read more

7 mo old runny nose cough no Fever Drainage out of ear looks like wax, no odor. Might be teething. Mildly fussy sleeping normal ear infection or no?

Cold: symptoms as you described will make a baby fussy as they do not like nasal congestion. It does not sound like your baby has an ear infection. Just observe for now and offer comfort as you can. A cold should resolve in a few days and until it does expect a crabby baby. ...Read more

My 9 mo old has a fever of 100.5, what should I do to help it go away? She doesn't seem sick in any way..? Her chest is very hot.

My 9 mo old has a fever of 100.5, what should I do to help it go away? She doesn't seem sick in any way..? Her chest is very hot.

Nothing/tylenol: A fever of 100.5f is not very high in a 9 month old. If he/she doesn't seem sick you don't need to give any treatment. The fever itself does no harm to the baby. If the temp. Was higher and the baby was acting sick you could give tylenol (acetaminophen) 10-15 mg per kg. By mouth. If the baby remained ill you should call your doctor or advice nurse. ...Read more

My 3 mo old is teething is there anything I can do to make it less painful? And is it possible for her to not have a fever thru the process?

Cold teething rings: There are a collection of teething remedies available otc but I have never seen consistent benefit from any of them. There are water filled teething rings that can be chilled/frozen & offered to baby to gnaw on , rotating them out with another after one warms up.Cold will chill the nerve & reduce pain messages to the brain if present. ...Read more

What can I do for my 19 mo old who has a fever of 100.1. ?

Fever: Fever is defined as a temperature of 101 and higher, at least in older children. Below that is a gray area where just observation is necessary. Since fever is a natural reaction by the body to quell an infection, you may wait till the temperature reaches 102, the time when discomfort starts, to start treating the fever. ...Read more

My 18 month got a shot at the well visit yesterday and today she has had a runny noise and not her self. Mo fever. Is there something I can do for her?

Immunizations: this time of the year, it is not uncommon for toddler to have a runny. Nose. It is probably a coincidence. However, it is also not uncommon for children to " not be themselves" after receiving immunizations. If she has a persistently high fever, is very lethargic, severe swelling or redness is the area of the injection, or breathing difficulties, then she should be evaluated right away. ...Read more

How should I treat my 17 mo son who is irritable, has a high fever, very green snot, and is coughing all the time?

Depends...: The symptoms you describe can be either a viral or bacterial illness - some serious, some not so serious. I'd start with calling his doctor's office, usually they'll have an afterhours advice nurse that can get a more complete story and a better assessment of how he's doing. Good luck and hope he feels better soon! ...Read more

13 mo old had a fever 102-103.9 for 3 days now her temp is down to 100.5, but she's very still cranky, fussy, clingy & drooling. Should I worry?

13 mo old had a fever 102-103.9 for 3 days now her temp is down to 100.5, but she's very still cranky, fussy, clingy & drooling. Should I worry?

See your doctor: Have you been to her doctor yet? Maybe there is an infection in her ear or her throat or somewhere else, and her doctor could give her something that will make her feel better. Or maybe this is a virus that will run its course. There are two ways to tell: you can give it more time, but you run the risk of worsening infection, or you could get a doc who knows the difference to examine her. ...Read more

My 15 mo old has been getting 102-103 degree fevers (rectally) every time a molar is cutting through, should I be concerned? He's acting totally fine.

My 15 mo old has been getting 102-103 degree fevers (rectally) every time a molar is cutting through, should I be concerned? He's acting totally fine.

Teething: Teething itself does not cause fever. If your baby is getting high temps it could be from a variety of causes - viral infections being the most common. In the face of "totally acting fine", you can monitor and if the fever persists or symptoms worsen then don't hesitate to have your child's pediatrician take a look. ...Read more
