Delayed: Laryngomalacia is not by itself a cause of any speech or other developmental delay. It is a problem with the stiffness of the upper windpipe not how the vocal cords work. You baby is fine: Your baby is just fine. Your baby is doing exactly what is expected at that age. All babies develop at different rates, so I wouldn't worry at all. Most babies will say mama and Dada between 4-9 months. ...Read more

Isolated speech: If this is the only issue, you have time to monitor and enhance this delay in speech/language. Work with your pediatrician. Likely you are seeing: he understands that objects continue to exist, even when they are not seen; responds to simple commands; responds to name; understands the meaning of no; imitates speech sounds; plays pat-a-cake or peek-a-boo; waves bye. Stimulate vocab by "see ; say". ...Read more

What qualifies as babbling for a 10 wk old baby?

Too young to babble: A 10-week old baby is not at the babbling stage yet. Babies at 2-3 months usually make cooing sounds and maybe squealing sounds once in a while. Babbling is the 2-3 syllable sounds babies make before they start saying "dada" or "baba". Babbling might start at 6-9 months. ...Read more

2.5 yr boy says 7 words. Has said 100.Rec. Lang. Is fine. history fam speech delay. Had glue ear. Autism r/o. Genetic test fine.Therapy didn't help. Worry?

Hearing?: Glue ear is generally diagnosed at surgery for tubes. Did he have tubes placed? Has he had a hearing test? I would ensure hearing is normal before focusing on the speech delay. If that is okay i would be sure to get another opinion of a pediatric speech therapist and potentially a pediatric ENT doctor. Also make sure his siblings aren't "talking for him". ...Read more

My girls is almost 13 months. She responds to commands and uses gestures a lot but no words yet. No even mama or dada. Should i be worried?

Probably not.: The only possible concern is with hearing - it can be good enough to hear loud commands, but not enough to form the basis for speaking. Having said that, if a 13 mo old child can tell you what she wants with gestures, there is less motivation to talk, and the actual "words" milestone is at 15 months, so you have time. If no words by 15, then it's time for early intervention and a hearing test. ...Read more

My 18month old is not talking. She recognizes n says all the alphabets and numbers to ten, says some words from songs, but not saying mom, dada yet y?

Speech delay?: If she recognizes, says all alphabets, counts up to ten & says some words she is smart, not to worry. Your child doesn't have speech delay. One common cause of speech delay is poor hearing. Recurrent ear infection, fluid in middle ear, positive f/h, use of some medicines in neonate cause hearing loss. If very concerned, check with pediatrician whether she passed hearing test. ...Read more
