Normal 07 Mo Says Dada Or Mama
When do babies start talking alot? My daughter is 18 mo and says mama dada and baby, and thats really it. Should I be concerned?
It depends.: Not all babies develop at the same pace or reach milestones at the same time. If you ask a group of moms when their children started talking you will get a different answer from each. Some babies take longer to learn how to coordinate their tongue and mouth to form sounds. Try not to worry; your daughter should be talking up a storm soon - and then you'll wish she would shut up! ...Read more

I have a14 months old he says mama Dada Nana he started saying out and has stopped should I be worried or has he just moved on from that word for now?
Don't worry, act now: Acquiring words & communicating are different. Regression in Expressive Language warrants prompt evaluation. Call your state Early Intervention Program for assessment AND fill out developmental screens on firstsigns.org to show your pediatrician for referral to a Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrician. If he has Autistic Spectrum Disorder, starting therapy now proffers the very best outcome. ...Read more
My 15-months old grandchild (boy) could only utter mama or dada (daddy) or instantly would say clear words but not really speaking at all. I am but w?
Speech issues: We divide speech acquisition into 2 large areas. 1)Receptive speech and 2)Expressive speech. Your grandson seems to be OK at receptive speech. Why, I'm not sure, but as long as you are talking and he evidences understanding, do not worry. Also, if he is also hearing Tagalong(?), it is well-known that kids who are learning more than 1 language at a time have delayed expressive language. ...Read more

I'm suffering from chronic diarrhea for 9 mo. Lost 30 lbs. Tests are normal. Dr. Says allergy but don't know what. Don't know what to do. Help pls.
Diarrhea and allergy: If you already see a gastroenterologist. If all infectious, hormonal etiologies have been ruled out and your doctor see a lot of eosinophilic infiltration in your gut, you might have a type of food allergy that causes severe diarrhea called eosinophilic gastroenteritis. If this is the case, you might need to be on elemental diet. Allergist physicians like us treat this condition. ...Read more
My 6 1/2 mo old ped. Felt his anterior fontanel but says that it might be closing early than usual. Should i be worried? Or is this normal @ his age?
Follow closely..: It is a bit early for the skull to fuse, but unless he has had a head MRI or ct to assess exactly how open or closed they are, i would not panic. If his head shape is normal and symmetric, if head size is increasing along appropriate percentiles, development is normal, then i would put my mind at ease. However, these parameters, including head size and shape, need to be monitored monthly for now. ...Read more
I had lab work done & today Doc says i have Herpes but i have mo outbreaks (never)I also had test 2 mths ago by GYN & it was normal Why? Do ReTest?
More detail needed: The HSV blood tests can give false results. With negative test 2 months earlier, and if no symptoms of new herpes in the meantime (usually obvious blisters or sores, either mouth or genital area), there is a good chance the new test result is false. Re-post another question with the details, including the exact test done (brand name) and the numerical results for both HSV1 and HSV2. ...Read more

Down : Down syndrome is pretty easy to detect on sight, and it's very unlikely that your baby has that condition without its having been detected. There could potentially be other issues, but it's not possible to tell whether or not there's anything wrong without a complete physicial evaluation. Babies develop at different rates, so there's no reason to be overly concerned if yours is a little behind his peers in some areas. Again, only a visit with your doctor can sort out what's within a normal range. ...Read more

My girls is almost 13 months. She responds to commands and uses gestures a lot but no words yet. No even mama or dada. Should i be worried?
Probably not.: The only possible concern is with hearing - it can be good enough to hear loud commands, but not enough to form the basis for speaking. Having said that, if a 13 mo old child can tell you what she wants with gestures, there is less motivation to talk, and the actual "words" milestone is at 15 months, so you have time. If no words by 15, then it's time for early intervention and a hearing test. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My baby is 16 months old and doesn't talk yet. No "mama". No "dada". No anything. Should i be concerned?
Speech Delay: Yes, you should be concerned. We expect that by 9 months babies are saying the "hard syllables" i.e. Mama, dada, baba... By 15 months they should know mama, dada (as nouns/names), no, bye-bye etc. Bring this up with your pediatrician so appropriate assessments and referrals can be made. The earlier an intervention is made the better the results. ...Read more
