Fibroids : Fibroids are very common and they can cause many symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, pain, pelvic pressure, and infertility or miscarriage. Fibroids are also very controversial in how much they contribute to these conditions as women with fibroids can have no symptoms at all. Fibroids usually shrink after menopause when your reproductive hormone levels fall. Ask 10 doctors what to do with fibroids and you will get several different answers. We all probably agree that when the symptoms are significant and we cannot find another cause then surgery is helpful. We sometimes remove just the fibroids (myomectomy), shrink or stabilize them them medically (bcp, gnrh agonists, progesterone) or radical surgery (hysterectomy). Sometime size alone is a reason to operate. If you are younger and the size is larger and getting larger, then myomectomy may be indicated just for size. We also worry more about possible cancer if the growth rate is very rapid. The decision regarding which therapy has to do with your life goals and medical condition. If yo want more children then hysterectomy is obviously not a good option. Medical therapy sometime works but some of the medications have side effects. A degenerative fibroid means that the tissue has died and it is regressing. Degenerative fibroids can be very painful. Your does not seems to be causing symptoms. You need to work with your physician to understand why he/she suggested the pill. If you are worried about the side effects of the medication then you may be better served with another approach. I do not think it wise to stop the medication without talking with your doctor who knows why they choose the treatment that you are on. Best wishes. ...Read more

Are femara (letrozole) and norethindrone used for stage 4 endometriosis?

Are femara (letrozole) and norethindrone used for stage 4 endometriosis?

Not very successfull: No medical treatment has ever been shown to be effective in treating stage IV endo. This stage means that there is deeply invasive endo usually between the rectum and vagina or cervix. Endo nodules are by definition deeper than 5mm, and the hormones can't penetrate well and they don't respond. You need a surgeon very experienced in complex procedures to remove the endo. ...Read more

Effective to take several Loestrin (1.5mg ethinyl estradiol, 30mcg Norethindrone acetate) instead of Plan B emergency contraceptive? How many pills?

EC: Although there are at least a dozen types of birth control pills that can be dosed as an emergency contraceptive, I can find no source that includes Loestrin among them. Perhaps someone else has a regimen, but I recommend getting Plan B or the like to ensure you get the maximum benefit. ...Read more

I am on norethindrone, for past 2 week having nasea and missed period, taken 5 pregnant tests- all negative. Is this a normal side effect?

I am on norethindrone, for past 2 week having nasea and missed period, taken 5 pregnant tests- all negative. Is this a normal side effect?

Maybe, maybe not: Normally, women don't take 5 pregnancy tests in 2 weeks (once a week works better, because in early pregnancy, it takes a few more days after a negative test for the HCG level to get high enough to show up on a urine pregnancy test). The pills are hormone pills, and can cause nausea or menstrual changes even without pregnancy, too. One should call the prescribing doctor for the next step. ...Read more

Bleed to death. How much does a 60 day supply of norethindrone or aygestin 5mg cost? What is purpose of

Withdrawal bleed: Progestins (aygestin, norethindrone) help with frequent heavy bleeding when due to irregular ovulation. The women bleed unpredictaby because they don't get the regular sloughing effect of a period. Progestins, once stopped, force a 'normal' menstrual bleed, which clears out the uterus so no further inappropriate bleeding occurs. For costs, you need to call your pharmacy. ...Read more
