Non Statin Drugs For High Cholesterol
It's not a statin.: Zetia (ezetimibe) is a cholesterol absorption blocker. By itself, it can lower LDL levels by 18%, which is relatively weak compared to some statins. However, when combined with a statin, it can give much more significant LDL lowering. Ask your doctor if this medication is right for you. Welchol (colesevelam) is a cholesterol absorption blocker of a different type, which may also be effective. ...Read more

Total risk: It's not wise to treat lab abnormalities in a vacuum. If your total cardiac risk exceeds 7.5% ten year risk, or if you have established vascular disease, a statin is advised (2013 Adult Treatment Panel guidelines, American Heart Assoc) since they've been shown repeatedly to lower risk while supplements and non-statin meds are either ineffective or minimally so. ...Read more
Back to basics: Thanks for your data! numbers all look pretty good. Tg is only mildly elevated and would respond best to low calorie diet with focus on reducing high glycemic index foods and fructose. Tg may come down, but I am not sure there is great benefit to that. Real focus of treatment is LDL but that is great. Eat plenty of fish. Regular aerobic exercise. Maintain healthy weight. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Low carb diet ok for high triglycerides? Taking triglyde. Triglyceride levels on meds is 350, LDL is 201, HDL 28, on meds. Is any fat ok? I exercise.
No: There were concerns decades ago about Clofibrate but they came to nothing. I searched the nih database for the past 20 years and found nothing, and it makes no sense biologically. If it did, the research piranhas would have grabbed it up -- it's all about trying to discover and prove something. The fibrates have saved many, many lives and i would not be concerned. ...Read more

Safe: But it is no good for lowering bad cholesterol. It may improve (a little) the good cholesterol and the best effect is on triglycerides. BUT, newer studies show NO benefits in mortality rates or frequency of heart attacks or strokes. Indication of Niacin has become more questionable since you may improve "numbers" but you do NOT improve outcomes ...Read more
