Non Statin Drugs For High Cholesterol
Cholesterol, a fat made by all our cells, has never been the correct issue but was promoted because (as a fat within all lipoprotein particles) it was cheaper to measure & if very high (esp. Fasting) tended to correlate with high LDL particle concentrations. In the later 1970's lipoprotein measurements cost $5, 000/sample. The NMR particle test, <$100, brought the LDL costs way ...Read more
Who would evaluate the two types of drugs(statins and cholesterol blocker) for a person with high cholesterol levels?

I read that chances of dying with high cholesterol if u do nothing is 1 in 186. Is this true? Statin drugs will kill me way before that if this is tru
Not sure but...: I have no idea where you read that & i question its accuracy, but high cholesterol has a surprisingly small role in cardiovascular disease. Statin drugs can cause serious side effects & have never been proven to extend life! for further discussion see http://www.Sott.Net/article/242516-heart-surgeon-speaks-out-on-what-really-causes-heart-disease & http://www.Spacedoc.Com/cholesterol_articles. ...Read more
Need more info but..: Not everyone with high cholesterol needs statins; it depends on how high and esp. on the subtypes of cholesterol. Statins can be toxic to the liver. It's not a statin.: Zetia (ezetimibe) is a cholesterol absorption blocker. By itself, it can lower LDL levels by 18%, which is relatively weak compared to some statins. However, when combined with a statin, it can give much more significant LDL lowering. Ask your doctor if this medication is right for you. Welchol (colesevelam) is a cholesterol absorption blocker of a different type, which may also be effective. ...Read more
I've heard of bile acid secuestrants as an alternative to statins for high cholesterol. What are the negatives to using them?
Partly helpful.: While bile acid sequestrants can help lower cholesterol, statins not only lower the LDL ("bad cholesterol"), but also have what are termed "pleiotropic effects" upon endothelial function, the stability of atherosclerotic plaques, decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation, and inhibiting the clotting response. Statins seem to have antitumor and other effects as well. ...Read more

I hve high cholesterol, dr gave me 2 months to exercise/diet otherwise statins, but i feel very light headed for some days now, could chol be the caus?
Numbers are't right: Current symptoms not due to cholesterol. Statins at your age no matter how high cholesterol seems aggressive. Lengthy discussion, but your risk of any vascular disease within the next 20 years is virtually zero. (google framingham risk calculator) statins reduce risk but reducing zero = no real benefit. This would all change if i knew you had vascular disease. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Several drugs exist which lower cholesterol by inhibiting an enzyme in liver cells (hmg-coa reductase) that is involved in cholesterol synthesis. These all have generic names that end in -statin, e.g. Atorvastatin (lipitor) and Simvastatin (zocor). Since nearly all of the meds in this class have been shown to have similar cardiovascular benefits, we often discuss them ...Read more
