Sedative (Definition)

A sedative is a medication that induces calm, relaxation, and usually, decreases anxiety. Sedatives - especially at higher doses - can induce sleep. The sleep-inducing attribute is more correctly called "hypnotic". Not surprisingly, most medications produce more than one specific effect. Therefore, one sedative may dominate in the reduction of anxiety and ...Read more

What are non-sedative antihistamines?

What are non-sedative antihistamines?

The newer ones: Antihistamines can cause sedation by entering the brain's tissue and binding to h1 receptors. (called "crossing the blood brain barrier".) that effect is desirable if you are taking an antihistamine for sleep (e.g. Benadryl). The newer antihistamines don't cross the blood brain barrier as much. These include (least to most sedate) fexofenadine (allegra), Cetirizine (zyrtec), loratidine (claritin). ...Read more

Are antidepressants potent antihistamines also?

Are antidepressants potent antihistamines also?

Some are, yes.: Looking at receptor inhibition profiles (lab data) we can see that some do indeed block histamine receptors. Older ones in the tca class (elavil, anafranil, etc), trazodone and even a more modern one like Remeron (mirtazapine) do so which can lead to increased sleepiness and appetite. As far as potency, they're not as effective as sudafed in fighting a cold. ...Read more

What are sedating antihistamines for insomnia?

What are sedating antihistamines for insomnia?

Benadryl (diphenhydramine).....: is probably the most readily available sedating antihistamine. It is a common ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) preparations for sleep, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) PM -- the PM part is diphenhydramine, the generic name for Benadryl. Another one I like to use is hydroxyzine (also known as Vistaril or Atarax) but that is only available as a prescription, however its metabolite is Zyrtec, which is OTC. ...Read more

Can Claritin (loratadine) non-drowsy antihistamine still cause drowsiness?

Yes: Claritin is a second generation antihistamine which causes much less drowsiness than first generation antihistamine, like benadryl (diphenhydramine). The number of people who feel drowsy on Claritin is so low that it is labeled "non-drowsy". But each of us is unique. I have plenty of patients who feel drowsy on claritin, especially petite women. ...Read more

Can effect of non drowsy allegra (fexofenadine) be reversed if mistakenly taken during sleeping time?

Can effect of non drowsy allegra (fexofenadine) be reversed if mistakenly taken during sleeping time?

I don't think so: I'm a bit unclear on the meaning of your question. Allegra (fexofenadine) is non-drowsy because it does not cross from the bloodstream into the brain where histamine receptors affecting wakefulness/drowsiness reside. The beneficial effects of antihistamines like Allegra (fexofenadine) are a result of interaction with histamine receptors on blood vessel cells & on dendrites of nerve cells outside the brain. ...Read more
