My mother just died at age 65 of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (multiple lesions, large one in brain). What are my risks for NHL or other cancers? I'm 36.

Not much increased: The malignant lymphomas by and large don't run in families. A few genes are known but they are of small effect. Stop worrying and live as richly and wisely as you can. I also see you report erectile dysfunction; I hope this is getting worked up and especially that prolactinoma and hemochromatosis have been ruled out. Best wishes. ...Read more

What would treatment look like for a teenager experiencing non-hodgkin's lymphoma, stage i or ii?

What would treatment look like for a teenager experiencing non-hodgkin's lymphoma, stage i or ii?

Depends on type: Not common but not different than for adult, i think: if indolent- surgery and possibly radiation then watchful waiting (maybe with bone marrow harvest for later use) if more aggressive, would use biochemotherapy (i.e.: "r-chop") after surgery. May also include radiation and marrow harvest. ...Read more

How is non-hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosed?

How is non-hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosed?

Scans and biopsy: Patients may have a lump(s) or feel quite ill with fever, night sweats, weight loss and/or anemia which brings them in to the ED or md. Many times blood tests and scans/x-rays are done which lead to a suspicion of lymphoma. A biopsy is required to prove that indeed the patient has lymphoma and also to tell exactly what type of lymphoma they have. ...Read more

My pathology report basically says I don't have non Hodgkin's lymphoma but should go through other testings to exclude Hodgkin's lymphoma among others?

Pathology of what?: My guess is you had blood sent for flow cytometry. If you just had this blood test, Hodgkin's disease (a type of lymphoma) can't be diagnosed with that. A pathologist has to look at tissue under the microscope to make the diagnosis. This is usually a lymph node that has been removed. If you have enlarged lymph nodes, this may be a test you will need. Ask your doctor. ...Read more
