Can be...: It's common to have constipation after any surgery, especially if you are taking any narcotic pain medication. The best think to do is to get some light activity (like walking 3 times per day). I also usually recommend to my patients over the counter Milk of Magnesia 30ml once in the morning and once at night. If you don't have a bowel movement in 48 hours you should see your doctor. ...Read more

Yes: Drink lots of fluid, walk frequently and reduce the use of prescription pain meds will help. If not better in a few days, try stool softener. As always, remember to call your surgeon to report your concerns. ...Read more

Take laxative: your pain medication can cause constipation, you need to take a laxative cut down on the pain medication, and eat more fruits, and drink a lot of water and juices. ...Read more

Constipation: This is always a tough problem after back surgery and your surgeon knows this. Please keep him or her informed. I think passing gas suggests you don't have an "ileus" problem where the bowels "go to sleep" after some types of surgery. If you have no pain or nausea, you can eat, and are still passing gas, I would not be surprised if you needed another 4-5 days. See your surgeon if you are unsure. ...Read more

My son had surgery for hirschsprung after birth, he's 4 now and having trouble control his bowel movement when passing wind. Is this normal?

Always possible: Hirschsprung can be short and long segment. If a large amount of colin had to be removed then it may be hard for your son to control gas and solids or semi formed stool. You may need to contact his surgeon and peds gi. A plan of action to help make stool more solid could help. 4year olds often have bowel control problems do it may be normal. ...Read more

While recovering after a knee surgery, sleeping off anesthesia, i woke up to a nurse helping me dress, i realized that i had made a bowel movement! help!

Sh_t happens: While anesthetized, we are not responsible for what we say or what we do. While it is not common to have a bowel movement during anesthesia, it sometimes happens and it is not your fault. It was not pleasant for you, but the nurse considered it nothing unusual. Sometime these things happen. ...Read more
