How come only allegra (fexofenadine) is effective with my food allergies, but no other product works? I don't have indoor/outdoor or seasonal allergies. Only food.

How come only allegra (fexofenadine) is effective with my food allergies, but no other product works? I don't have indoor/outdoor or seasonal allergies. Only food.

Everyone's different: Many people prefer one product over another. It also depends on what symptoms you're trying to treat, and whether they are truly allergy or ige mediated. Antihistamines will frequently be ineffective in gastrointestinal symptoms. Generally food allergies are treated with avoidance. If your food allergy diagnosis and treatment are unclear, an oral challenge is really the only way to diagnose. ...Read more

Are there any cures for pet allergies?

Are there any cures for pet allergies?

Not exactly: The best treatment is to not have a pet in the house and avoid those pets as possible. The best long term medical treatment is allergy immunotherapy (allergy shots). They can decrease symptoms in over 80% of people. While it is not a cure, it is the closest that is currently available. (and the needles are really tiny!). ...Read more

Just found out that there is mold in my house. Is there any link between mold and autoimmune diseases?

Probably;controversy: Based on the work of pioneering specialist in mold-related illness Ritchie Shoemaker MD, mold can trigger autoimmune disease in about 25% of the population with genetic susceptibility. See http://www.survivingmold.com/diagnosis/the-biotoxin-pathway However, his groundbreaking work is not yet accepted by the mainstream so is somewhat controversial. But I agree mold CAN trigger autoimmunity in some. ...Read more

Have researchers found there is a link between stess and developing allergies?

No good answer: Whereas stress makes any illnesses worse, there is no proof that it causes allergies. Night cough, no allergies, no URI symptoms, no allergies. Nonsmoker. Adult, 63, module ratels obese. Cause?

GE Reflux/asthma/CHF: If your cough occurs while lying down, it could be either cardiac or gastrointestinal in origin, instead of just pulmonary. If it is associated with shortness of breath and chest or back pain, you need to see your doctor right away. If it is associated ever with a sour taste in the mouth , almost vomiting, and heartburn it may be gastrointestinal reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus. ...Read more

Is there a correlation between Tonsillectomy and increased pet allergies? Particularly, cat dander.

Is there a correlation between Tonsillectomy and increased pet allergies? Particularly, cat dander.

Not likely: There is an association between allergic rhinitis in general (pollens, dust mite, animal dander etc) and childhood andenotonsillar hypertrophy. I have never heard of an increase in incidence of pet/cat allergy post-tonsillectomy and a quick literature search came up empty. The tonsils house many controller cells that drive (or inhibit) antibody responses to infection so it is conceivable. ...Read more
