HIV transmission: HIV is spread only by blood and certain other body fluids, including semen and vaginal fluid. It is not spread by casual contact and it would not be spread by using a Nix (permethrin) styptic pencil as HIV is not spread by contact with environmental surfaces that are not grossly contaminated with the fluid vehicle. ...Read more

If not, she will have to use a preventative inhaler like sereflo, but that will also help to open her chest.

Hi - I m pretty sure I have lice, but my apartment also has fleas. Will Nix (1% permethrin) kill both these pests?
Yes and maybe no...: Sorry for the confusing answer. Permethrin may indeed kill both, but also many of these pests are now resistant to that drug. In some areas of the US as much as 50% of luce are resistant to Permethrin. If you're having problems with recurring infestations, talk to your doc about other options for treatment in your area of the country. Also, remember environmental controls to prevent recurrences ...Read more

No: Pyrethrins (active ingredient in nix) are designed to paralyze insects. They do not last long so have very little long term effect. Additionally many bed bugs have become resistant.: http://evolution.Berkeley.Edu/evolibrary/news/100901_bedbugs products which contain pyrethrins can damage furniture too. ...Read more

I bought some Nix (permethrin) Cream Rinse with 1% Permethrin. How long do I need to keep it on my skin to treat scabies? Or is it strong enough to kill them?
No: The manufacturer recommends to leave it on the patient's hair for 10 minutes. Most importantly, this is an insecticide that paralyze the lice, thus what you want is to grab the fine comb and do an extensive combing as indicated in the instructions, so the patient does not shed the lice all over. Keep in mind that there is resistance to this type of drugs, thus follow up with pcp is important. ...Read more
Nix (permethrin) is not...: ...My favorite treatment, as many strains of head lice are now resistant to it. Elimite cream (applied to dry hair & left on overnight under shower cap) works better, although not officially approved for that indication. Malathion (ovide lotion) works fastest, but stinks, and is flammable! kwell shampoo also works fast (repeat in 1 week), but like nix, (permethrin) resistance is common. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not a good choice: Nonprescription nix (permethrin 1%) is used to treat lice but is not strong enough to cure scabies. Prescription Permethrin 5%(elimite) cream is the most common medication to treat scabies and it works well. Lindane is mentioned in the above answer- it is rarely used now and carries a boxed warning because it has caused seizures and death in some age groups and low weight individuals. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it normal that after putting on nix 5% permethrin cream to kill scabies mites, I have more bumps next morning and it didn't itch this bad before?
Can happen: Scabies mites burrow into the upper layers of your skin leaving fecal debris behind in their tracts. The formation of skin changes and itching is the bodies allergic response to the fecal debris. This can persist for a period after the mites are dead. An antihistamine taken by mouth along with an over the counter steroid scream may help with the skin & itching. ...Read more
Used Nix (permethrin) lice spray on couch and chair. So nervous it is going to cause cancer in my toddler is the risk really bad?Used it in August. Im panicked.
No Do not worry: Chemicals like this do not cause cancer that easily. First of all anything that carries much risk for Cancer will not be available for use. Further, it takes many years of repeated use and exposure before Cancer can be created. Our bodies are very efficient in cleaning up any chemicals that enter our body. Even if some cell damage is done , the body can repair it quite efficiently. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it mites? Family is itchy but no rash. PA says try Nix (permethrin) as an overnight lotion, shower off in the am. Sound like reasonable course of treatment?
Itchy Family: Treating the entire family for mites when the entire itches seems reasonable. Mites, on the other hand, should not cause loose stools. Loose stools along with rash make me think of viral or bacterial causes. Other environmental causes should be considered such as new laundry detergent, new soap, new carpet, new paint, new pet or recent travel and the related environmental exposures. ...Read more
