Lying down: It is surprising to me that a 23 year old would have significant enough coronary artery disease to require these medications. Nitroglycerin will briefly lower your blood pressure more which could be detrimental. If you are lying down when you take it you may not pass out or feel as dizzy. I have chest pain. Cleared by Heart MD. ALL other system R/O. Put on Imdur ER and Nitrostat (nitroglycerin). They are only things that help. Is ok to take long term?

Diagnosis?: U say that ur Heart MD (presumably a Cardiologist) "cleared" you. What does that mean? What is the diagnosis? Do you have Prinzmetal's angina (ie coronary artery spasm with no blockage)? Is it Diffuse Esophageal Spasm, which mimics chest pain? In pts with heart disease (CAD), being on long-term nitrates increase mortality; however, u r young (23) & probably don't have CAD. I've been taking nitroglycerin for episodes of chest discomfort (was prescribed by cardiologist to see if it helped). I don't notice much relief from it. Does this indicate it's not artery spasms?

Not necessarily: The crucial question you are asking is 'do I have cardiac disease, and is the chest discomfort I am experiencing due to this heart disease'? Ntg test does not do much to help to get to the answer to the question. Further testing needs to be done, such as an echocardiogram (which gives more info about the heart valves), stress testing and angiogram, which tells info about the coronary vessels. ...Read more
