Can you take nicorette (nicotine gum) and nitro-dur?

Svt, endurance athlete. Prescribed 50mg metoprolol. Took 25mg, had symptomatic hypotension (low BP in general). Prescribed diltiazem er, 120mg. Safe?

Not completely safe: The trigger for svt needs to be determined. Stress ; holter. Metoprolol comes in 3x/day ; once daily forms. Daily form at doses of 12.5-25 mgs unlikely to lower BP in a young hydrated person and may control svt. Diltiazem er has some blood pressure lowering properties but is a good choice for svt. Diltiazem sa 120mgs is anti-inotropic, but this is a low dose. Both but may reduce endurance mildly. ...Read more

Propranolol 60 mg ER vs toprol (metoprolol) 25 mg er. Which lowers blood pressure most?

Propranolol 60 mg ER vs toprol (metoprolol) 25 mg er. Which lowers blood pressure most?

Ford v Chevy v Dodge: This is a question best addressed w/your doctor. Both are good blood pressure lowering medications that also keep your heart from beating too fast (beta blocker class). Toprol (metoprolol) has more studies recently regarding benefit in heart failure. Of course, cost can play into decision, too, although both are available as generics for $4/mo (http://i.Walmartimages.Com/i/if/hmp/fusion/customer_list.Pdf). ...Read more

Why take MB?: Your question is a bit tough to understand, could you rephrase it? I can't think of a reason why you would want to take MB since it's not the most effective supplement for what you are potentially trying to achieve with it. As for the medications that you are on, I don't see a reason to say that it would be contraindicated. ...Read more

83 yrs f; stable diastolic hf; rate controlled a-fib. Meds: cardizem, coumadin, (warfarin) lasix, inderal, spiriva (mild copd). Would a cardioselective betablocker be better than inderal ?

Theoretically yes: In patients with COPD or asthma , cardioselective beta blockers like atenolol are felt to be superior to Inderal (propranolol) which also has possible harmful effects on the bronchial tree and could produce wheezing(bronchospasm). This may be a concern in someone like you who has copd. Your physician is best to advise you, however especially if you're doing well on inderal (propranolol). ...Read more

Which calcium channel blocker is most effective for severe raynauds, digital ischemia and exercise-induced pulmonary hypertension? I take 7.5 mg amlodipine but now wondering if diltiazem was better.

Unsure. But: You can always try and see which one works best for you, with the support of you doc. There are many issues that vary the results among different calcium blockers including different absorption and metabolism from a patient to another. We usually use amlodipine but you can tell better if Diltiazem feels more effective for you. Would discuss with my doc regarding a possible switch trial. ...Read more
