Nitrite Positive In Urine Pyelonephritis
Could be either: Infection in the urinary tract often begins with a bladder infection; this may extend further "upstream" to involve the kidneys (but the kidneys could also be a primary source of infection). Either way, nitrates on the dipstick urinalysis usually is how's up as a "byproduct" of bacteria commonly infecting the urinary tract. A kidney infection is usually more symptomatic and more serious. ...Read more
Urine is the product of the kidneys, which is produced to eliminate the waste products of metabolism, manage body fluid balance, &maintain acid-base balance. The blood is first filtered by the kidneys, and the composition of the resulting fluid is then altered depending on the body's needs. It is composed of mostly water, and breakdown products from blood cells impart ...Read more

What does it mean when your urine is positive for Nitrite and tested moderate for bacteria? Do you have a UTI? Is further testing necessary?
Bacteria reduce NO3: These are lab findings on a urine test- and what needs to happen is for your doctor to interpret the test in the clinical setting. Specifically, I would want to 'match up' any urinary symptoms you have, with the urinary findings. A very important element of the urinalysis is whether you have white cells (WBCs) present or not. A few are allowed, but more than 5 and I would pay attention. ...Read more
More information: There is more information on a urinalysis that is needed to know what might be going on. Where there red blood cells, leukocyte esterase, etc? Also, why was the test performed in the first place. Please repost the question with more details. It may be that the specimen was not a 'clean catch' meaning it has some contamination and should be repeated. ...Read more
25yo male asymptomatic, come with urine biochemistry showing positive nitrite, red cells 1+, protein 1+, bilirubin1+, urobilinogen 1+. Why?
Urine results: These results could be all false positive, but he needs to be evaluated further by repeat ua and culture. Nitrites can be positive from air exposure, contamination or phenazopyridine. Protein can be present transiently from benign causes such as standing for a long time. Bilirubin and uribilinigen can be due to liver/biliary problems. Rbcs can be due to infection, stones, tumors or kidney disease. ...Read more
My urine test was positive for nitrites, 2+ protein, and 1+ bilrubin. all the other fields are normal. including bacteria. are these results ok?
I have a ph of 9 in my urine. Positive for nitrite and a specific gravity of 1.005. My urine smells awful but no burning sensation on passing it?
Be checked...: Being (+) in nitrite in foul smelly urine suggested having asymptomatic UTI with gram(-) bacilli in urine. Urine Sp Gr of 1.005 indicates diluted urine from high water intake or poor kidney concentrating ability. Yet, you should be checked systemically as described in http://formefirst.com/eNewsletter06.html & in UTI & Voiding Trouble in http://formefirst.com/UTI.html and its related subjects... ...Read more
Ua showed i was negative for leukocytes. Negative for white blood cells but positive for nitrites and many crystals in urine. Is this normal?
Clinical symptoms?: It is possible to have a UTI that only shows positivity for nitrites and be negative for wbcs. Studies have shown that when nitrites are positive, a UTI has a strong chance of being present ( = good specificity for the test). Many crystals can be caused by kidney stones or food metabolism issues. ...Read more
An at home urine test showed that I have 500+++ leukocytes but no nitrites in my urine. I have no other signs or symptoms. Should I be worried?
Need to evaluate: You may have urinary infection and it would be a good idea to see your doctor for an evaluation and if needed, treatment. ...Read more
I recently had a urology done. It came back with nitrites in my urine. But i was told that high amounts of caffeine before the test could cause this?
Uti: When both leucoyte and nitrites are positive then it is strongly indicative of uti. If only leucocyte is positive and nitrite negative, it can still be uti, but with organisms who doesnt convert to nitrite, low urine ph or early phase of uti. Vice versa also indicates UTI and if alone nitrite is pos it is still a strong predictor of uti. In all circumstances clinical signs and symptoms are imp. ...Read more
I have nitrite present in urine without any other problem(everything else normal) ! no symptoms also! what causes it ?
See below: If the diet is lacking in nitrates, lack of nitrite in urine is meaningless. There may be infection with organisms that do not make nitrite, or the infection may be in the urethra. All lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the test is in the best position to do that. ...Read more

It is not unusual: It is not unusual to have wbcs with negative nitrites. It may be a good idea to know if you are on Antibiotics& what grows in urine cultuse,Whenever there are leucocytes in the urine it is due to urinary tract infection.Usually nitries test is also positive but can be neg sometimes.I am sure your doctor ordered urine culture.Follow up with your urologist who is treating you,as you may need antibiot ...Read more
Urine dipstick showed nitrites, put on ab's. 3 days later, called and told no growth in culture, stop ab's. How can I have nitrites but no uti?
Nitrites: While the presence of nitrites in urine usually signifies the presence of a urinary tract infection, it is possible that someone misread the strip. Another possibility is that the urine specimen stood too long and some bacterial contamination took place but the number of organisms was too small to make the culture results postive. The culture is the significant result. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Comprised of nitrogen & 2 oxygen molecules. Sodium nitrite is used in meat industry to prevent bacterial growth & to maintain the meat's red color (≥ 22mg/kg body weight is toxic); cooking at high heat allows nitrites to combine with Amino Acids to form nitros-amines (carcinogens). It can be converted by many pathways to nitric oxide, a potent vaso-dilator.Amyl nitrite can be ...Read more
