Prurititis: Itchiness with a rash is termed pruritis and can occur for no systemic reason at all. First attempt to treat it with an over-the-counter antihistamine such as zyrtec (cetirizine) (no decongestant needed) to see if taken regularly, your itching improves. Sarna lotion is a non-steroidal lotion which can be used as well. If no sucess, see your dermatologist. He/she may need to check some labs. ...Read more

Mast cells are specialized histamine containing cells in skin which get triggered by some stimulus- ie food product, detergent, cream, or even emotions like anxiety, chronic diseases esp liver and kidney diseases, certain cancers and graft vs host disease could also be trigger. Depends on the cause: Many, many things cause generalized itching. Itching is almost always worse at night, and showers usually soothe it, whatever the cause. You need an exam to determine the cause. You can try a long-acting antihistamine such as Allegra (fexofenadine) (now over-the-counter), but that just treats the symptoms, not the cause. See a dermatologist. ...Read more
