Should I use the nicotine patch to quit smoking? Or should I try electronic cigarettes?

Should I use the nicotine patch to quit smoking? Or should I try electronic cigarettes?

Both may help with: The physical side of the addiction, but what causes relapse is failure to deal with the behavioral side. The associations to cigarettes and nicotine is generally what really re-addicts quitters, so the best approach is really to modify all the associations of behaviors with smoking. This takes a LOT longer than merely withdrawing from nicotine. ...Read more

I accidentally bought the 14mg nicotine patch instead of the 21mg one that I need. Can I take this 14mg one off & smoke a cigarette until then?

No. Don't. Too risky: Since you'll need the 14 in a few weeks, it's not a waste of them. Just go and get the correct one for now. Don't mix the patches w/ cigarettes ever. If you are trying to quit - avoid having cigarettes around. If you don't want to quit now - that's okay. You can try again in a few weeks, etc. But don't mix. ...Read more

How does a nicotine patch work for cigarette addiction?

How does a nicotine patch work for cigarette addiction?

Replaces the cigaret: When helping someone quit smoking, we may prescribe one of a variety of "nicotine replacement systems": the patch, gum, lozenges, inhaler or spray. The pt sets a quit date; switches from smoking cigarettes to using one of the nrs's (such as the patch); and then the nrs is gradually tapered over the next 2-3 months, until nicotine has been eliminated from the body. ...Read more

What happens if you screw up and smoke a cigarette while you have a nicotine patch?

Slow growth is good: The patch replaces the nicotine from smoking. Adding a cigarette simply increases the dose of nicotine. Punishing yourself by calling yourself a screw up does not help. One day at a time works best. If you wean off very gently, and use mutual support, you may find that recovery is possible. Consider attending a meeting of nicotine anonymous. ...Read more

What to do about first day using nicoderm (nicotine patch) patch and still having cravings is it ok to use e-cig?

What to do about first day using nicoderm (nicotine patch) patch and still having cravings is it ok to use e-cig?

I don't recommend it: E-cigs have not been shown to promote smoking cessation in all people - some actually find it a path back to smoking. I recommend the use of nicotine lozenges or gum when cravings come up, while still using the patch. If you are on a lower-dose patch and were a very heavy smoker, then raising the patch strength to 21 or 22 mg may help, or even using more than one patch. Get into a program as well ...Read more

Is it ok to cut a nicotine patch in half to make a smaller dose?

Yes: Nicoderm (nicotine patch) has nicotine dissolved into the glue, so it is possible to "hack" the patches. Let's say that you can buy #14 patches that are 21mg each for $50. If you want to taper your dose over a month, apply a full patch for 1 week, 1/2 patch for 1 week, and 1/4 patch for 2 weeks, then you're off! There are some patches that have a gel reservoir that can't be cut, so examine before you buy! ...Read more

How long after expiration are habitrol (nicotine patch) patches good?

Not effective: Medicine or patches do not necessarily go bad in general but the reason the fda puts an expiration date is to make you aware of the potency of the medication/treatment. After the expiration date, the medicine is less effective and possibly not work at all. I would find a way to get a patch that is not expired to receive the maximum effect. ...Read more
