Newborn Hasn T Pooped In 2 Days
My newborn (almost 1 MO) hasn't pooped in two days and seems to be in pain. Crying and drawing his legs up. Eating and peeing fine. What to do?
Normal in some: Your typical breast fed baby can have a little poo smear every feeding or one giant blowout every 7-10 days.Formula babies go more often and daily. If soft, I don't consider it constipation. Babes do lots of leg drawing and fuss for no particular reason, but the process may help push food along. As long as baby wets every 6 hours or more I would consider things within the range of normal ...Read more
Probably not: This can be very normal - if the baby is not fussy and feeding well, unlikely to be a problem. However, if the baby isn't feeding well - or you are not sure, especially if there are fewer wet diapers than expected (less than 4-6 per day), make sure you check with your doctor. Or if the newborn has any special issues - jaundice for example - check with your doctor. ...Read more
Breast or bottle?: Breast fed babies can have a little smear with each feed or have one big blowout every 7-10 days. Bottle fed kids will poo more predictably & should go daily. If the poo is soft it is not considered constipation. I don't get hung up on babies timing, I like to look at them to see how they feel. ...Read more
Okay well my newborn isn't pooping been one day now or 2 days she hasn't peed or poop. Am worried. Am also breastfeeding. & she is getting the milk?
Urine output: One of the ways we gauge adequate breast milk intake is by the number of wet diapers a baby makes in a 24 hour period (should be at least 5). The other way is by weight gain (at least an ounce per day). Stooling patterns are highly variable in nursed newborns as some stool every feed while others stool once a week! ...Read more
15 days old newborn only defecates through rectal stimulation. She used to poop without help last week. She hasn't pooped without help for 3 days.?
My newborn is having trouble pooping he is 17 days old his doc gave him an enema last Saturday and again on Monday and since then no poop what to do?
Constipation: This sounds like more involved of a problem, an an enema is usually not the first intervention to alleviate constipation in a newborn. I advise you to see a gastrointestinal specialist ASAP, or take the baby to an ER or urgent care center to rule more serious causes of GI obstruction. Please do not give any more enemas until the cause of constipation is diagnosed by a specialist ...Read more
Usually normal but..: Poops can happen after every feeding, but they can also happen every few days (up to 10 in a breast fed child), and frequency can change at random. The child's mood, appetite, weight gain, urine output, and other factors are more important than poop frequency in determining the level of concern. ...Read more
Depends on situation: A newborn must first pass the dark sticky meconium stool ; this starts day one or is abnormal. Once it clears, if baby is breast fed they may stool a little smear every feeding or one big crib full once a week. Breast milk is so well digested that it may not leave much behind for poo. If it is soft, the frequency of stooling is not important.Formula babies go more often. ...Read more
Almost anything: Initial newborn poop is usually greenish black meconium. Aftter that it can be any one of a number of colors-brown, yellow, green. It can be dark or light, firm, hard or soft, all of which can be normal. Red or bloody, tarry black or white could mean a serious problem and your pediatrician shoul be called. ...Read more
My newborn hasn't pooped in 24 hours and he used to poop almost every changing, should we be concerned?
No: As long as he is comfortable and has no other symptoms, such as vomiting and abdominal distention with firmness, he is likely OK. He may also continue to pass some gas. There is a huge variation in what is considered normal stooling frequency. All the best. ...Read more
Probably OK: Breast milk is better digested than formula. At 3-4 wks of age breast fed babies may have a decrease in frequency of poops to every few days. Switching between breast and bottle can contribute to variation in frequency and character of poop. If your baby is eating well, belly is soft, and s/he is not fussy/irritable/crying more than usual it's probably fine. If you are worried, see your doctor. ...Read more
My newborn usually has runny poops (breastfed) but she hasn't had a runny or solid poop. The bath helped her have runny poop and so did vaseline.
Breast Fed Babies: Can have semiloose to runny or seedy mucousy, sour smelling poop after every feeding (like 6-8 times/day), or they can have poop every 6-8 days. Both are normal. So, you don't have to do anything to make baby poop. As song as there is no other issue, like vomiting, distention of abdomen or very hard stool, your baby is ok. If want further explanation, talk to baby's pediatrician in next visit. ...Read more
What can I do to stop my newborn from being constipated, he is straining to poop since yesterday, I tryed warm water but I didn't see any results?
Constipated???: Constipation is best defined as a thickened or dry stool produced when the large intestine extracts too much water. Breast fed babies can have poo every feed or only 1/wk. If it is soft, it is normal.Formula fed babies go more often. Full strength apple juice or prune juice @ 1 oz once or twice daily will often loosen stools. ...Read more
My baby is 2 months old. Her poop been watery since newborn I am breast & formula feeding. Lately I've been eating dairy & chocolates could that be caus?
A 2 month old will have loose stools depending on whether they are breast or bottle fed. Normally yellow loose (looks like mustard or posse cottage cheese) can be normal. Some babies are sensitive to what the mother eats if she is breastfeeding and you can try eliminating dairy etc but I would
sto[ formula feeds and try exclusively breast feeding to see if it improves. ...Read more

What does a darker sticky poop mean for newborn? I forgot what the GI doctor told me today. Something about more acid in stomach. Is that right?
NORMAL: The GI tract of the baby is fully formed by 12-16 weeks. The baby swallow small amounts of amniotic fluid which contains some shed hair and surface cells. Small amounts of bile is made by the liver, which adds color to the poo. Enzymes in small amounts digest this debris, but baby is not supposed to stool until after birth. Then the poo is a sticky mess. Stomach acid starts forming after birth. ...Read more
My 9 month old has fever no vomiting her poop is very soft like a newborn she is sleeping a lot during the day n not eating as much is this normal?
Yes if needed: Sometimes a newborn makes a bunch of grunty sounds that really mean nothing. They have no social conscience and worry little that their noises would bother us. You can coat a q-tip with vasaline & insert it in the anus to the depth of the cotton & move it a bit & a stool that is ready to move should easily follow it out. ...Read more

My formula fed 3 month old hasn't pooped in 2 days. She normally poops at least two times a day, and her stools are soft but thick.
My breat fed two month old hasn't pooped in 4 days. What could be wrong and what can I do help her. She's been fussing and crying a whole lot.
That is too long.: Is she passing gas? You need to call your pediatrician's office to let them know. Ask what you can do. Your baby may be dehydrated or constipated. Give your baby some purified water to drink. This should help reduce her crying if she is constipated. Your pediatrician can tell you what more you can do, if constipated. Listen closely! ...Read more
No - usually: Not all babies poop every day. Constipation is defined more by stool consistency, not frequency. So a baby that has hard rabbit pellet poop but goes 2-3 times a day is constipated, but a baby that has soft, mushy poop but only goes every 3-4 days is not constipated and that's normal and not uncommon. Some babies have efficient GI tracts and just don't make that much poop, so don't need to go daily. ...Read more

My baby is one month and when he go to the bathroom he crys and its been two days since he pooped what to do?
Mild intervention: It's not uncommon for stool to firm up around a month, even if you're breast feeding. Keeping the child well hydrated, and slipping an ounce or two of pear or white grape juice into the formula or breast milk once a day may help. Taking a rectal temperature may stimulate stooling. Otherwise, talk with your doc. ...Read more

Don't worry: Unless the number of BM's have greatly increased and she is acting fussy and not eating well. Watch for the next few days, and in most cases these changes resolve without an explanation. See your doctor if not resolving ...Read more
