Postive, high, rast test results - only hayfever and animal reactions though? Are rast tests reliable?
RAST vs skin tests: The reason allergists prefer skin tests to rast tests is because the skin tests show your body's biological response to allergens. Rast tests only measure the amount of antibody and do not predict its clinical binding and symptom-provoking abilities. That said, no test is perfect. All have to be compared to your experience and correlated with your history. Allergists spend more time doing this. ...Read more
Can environmental allergies (food, pollen, dust mites, contrast dye, penicillin) cause a high positive ANA?
I have seen this: While the +ANA is suggestive of SLE there can be other causes - other connective tissue disease, autoimmune thyroid disease, auto immune hepatitis to name some. I have seen a lot of people with + ANAs who only have as another problem a history of allergic reactions and I am convinced that thee allergic reactions can cause a + ANA. Everyone can have very low titters (amount) of ANA. ...Read more
Does desensitization vaccination works for allergic asthma?I got positive skin prick tests for 4-5 allergens....
Yes: It is effective about 80% of the time. However I'd doubt that getting allergy shots for 4-5 allergens would work for you since most people are allergic to dozens of airborne allergens except in the case of occupational exposure. ...Read more

Hi, if a person has a perennial ryegrass allergy, are they also allergic to rye breads and other rye items?
Have hives - suspect pecan allergy. Now stopped all tree nuts. If it is tree nut allergy, how long might hives continue to appear?
Why nut allergy?: Unless you have known nut allergy, the likelihood of new food allergy at your age is unlikely. If your hives are truly due to pecan allergy, they would resolve within a few days, more rapidly if you take an antihistamine such as fexofenadine 180mg, or Cetirizine 10mg for a couple of days. If they persist and do not respond to the above, see a physician. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

If food allergy prick test is negative (mild redness) and blood rast test negative is it mean you are not allergic to foods? So y get reaction to foods
Not 100%: If both tests are negative, the chance of being allergic to that food is very very small. However when the history of a food allergy is strong, and the tests were negative, i often ask the patient to bring in the fresh food for the testing instead of relying on commercial food extracts. If the person is still quite concerned over it a challenge test can be done at the office. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Nothing is perfect: No test is 100% reliable - neither skin testing nor blood testing. That's why allergists try to order relevant tests selected based on a comprehensive medical history and physical examination. The results must be interpreted & used as clues to a solution. They're not an answer in themselves. I'm frequently called by doctors who order allergy tests & then want me interpret them over the phone. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
