HmG 10.7- ferritin 6- hematologist said heavy periods &taking high dose nexium (esomeprazole) which stops iron absorption. Taking Ferrex 150 BID-how to fix Fast?
Long term: The fact that you became anemic means you lost all of your body stores of iron and it will take about a year to build up the stores, even after your hemoglobin becomes normal. You may try taking your iron pills three times a day. Take these with meals. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. ...Read more

No: You are not iron deficient. See a dermatologist for diagnosis. You might have alopecia areata or another cause for your symptoms. ALSO note that iron deficiency, if very severe and prolonged, may cause thin nails which are caved in like a spoon. Not ridges. Hair loss is listed in older texts as due to low iron. But in the only rigorous study of it it was clear that iron deficiency is not a cause o ...Read more

Magnesium?: I hope a doctor more expertised will also reply, but I do hear that Magnesium can interact w/ Zoloft (sertraline) (and other things) to imbalance healthy gut function. Female 40, thin, vegetarian: Iron 23, WBC 3.8, RBC 4.55, HGB 11.2, HCT 37.2, RDW 18.6 — Is it normal to be anemic? How much should I supplement?
Get some iron: Vegetarianism is a moral choice, not a health-promoting one, and I admire you for your decision. All vegetarians need to supplement if they're going to get enough iron. Unfortified foods promoted for vegetarians as "iron-rich" mostly aren't. With the low iron and high RDW, you're probably deficient. Your physician can check you to be sure you're not also losing iron, and recommend a daily dose. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is advil (ibuprofen) needed ?: Long term use, even every other day, esp. when older, can lead to kidney issues. So the question is Advil offering a discernible benefit as you have Oxy. If the answer is no, then stop Advil as it's also requiring use of Prevacid (lansoprazole) which will not minimize renal risk. Since many take NSAIDs for arthritic pain there are topical options including Lidocaine.Voltaren, however is a topical NSAID option ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
