What is the recommended treatment for severe peripheral neurapathy caused by hiv. Neurontin, lyrica (pregabalin) have not been effective. Ment for severe periph?
Cost and absorption: Gabapentin (neurontin) and Pregabalin (lyrica) are structurally similar and have similar effects pharmacologically. Pregabalin is absorbed better and is more potent in some studies, however it is also quite a bit more expensive since it is not available as a generic. ...Read more
Mechanisms of action: Meds that act on calcium channels = Gabapentin and lyrica; likely no new meds with that same mechanism of action for a while. But, existing meds for neuropathy w/ different moa include Cymbalta & venlafaxine (snris), Amitriptyline and other heterocyclic antidepressants, tizanidine (alpha2 agonist), vimpat (lacosamide) (anticonvulsant), Alpha lipoic acid, and vitamin B12 + b6 + folate supplements. Is there a pill that can help with my neuropathy and anxiety at the same time. I've tried Neurontin and lyrica (pregabalin) didn't help?
It depends: It depends on what's causing your neuropathy. Sometimes older medications called "tricyclic antidepressants" can help both anxiety and neuropathy. New medications such as duloxitine and venlafaxine can also help. Finally, don't overlook behavioral techniques such as visualization exercises which can decrease pain sensitivity and also help anxiety. Hope this answer helps. ...Read more
I have severe neuropathy pain as a result of radiation & chemo for colorectal cancer Stage IIIB. Taking Neurontin. Tried Lyrica (pregabalin). Nothing is helping.
Md recommended I change from Neurontin to lyrica (pregabalin) for peripheral neuropathy. Should I expect to have decreased feelings of numbness in toes and feet?
Different treatments: Peripheral neuropathy is when the nerves do not function as they should when the sensory nerves are affected, the sensations can range from complete lack of sensation to a "lightning bolt" pain that occurs sporadically. Both of these medications are used to treat peripheral neuropathy as well as several others. Not all medications work for everybody so use it for a while to be sure. ...Read more
Basically price: Gabapentin is older and available generically, so much cheaper. Lyrica (pregabalin) is newer dosages are different and somewhat less frequent than gabapentin. Lyrica (pregabalin)- because it is newer has more indications (labelled uses- ie postherpetic neuralgia and fibromyalgia) but Gabapentin will work just as well. Gabapentin (neurontin) was originally marketed for seizure disorders but more commonly used for neuralgi. ...Read more

Is it ok to take Lyrica (pregabalin) and Neurontin? I use Neurontin to help me sleep at night. Won't take together just same day
Avoid both for sleep: These medications will cause sleepiness but as a side effect. They can cause or worsen already existing sleep problems, not to mention affect your alertness while you are awake. If your problem falling asleep is due to pain, you will need better control of that during the day. Insomnia can result and sleep hygiene is the best way to help you sleep and may be combined with a safer sleep medication. ...Read more
I have neuropathy. Neurontin is not effective and Lyrica (pregabalin) is too expensive as well as being ineffective. Is there ANYTHING that will work? I have tried
2 directions.: You are asking for medications which may assist symptoms, but it is far more important to determine underlying cause, and treat that. Neuropathy may be caused from multiple reasons, and a neurologist who has some experience and understanding needs to be sought. Sometimes, vitamins help, sometimes IVIG may be answer. Lyrica (pregabalin) merely blunts the symptoms. ...Read more

Just started lyrica (pregabalin) 75mg weaning off Neurontin 300mg 4 tabs a day what can I expect if any for side effects in the weaning process?
Slow taper: Taper the neurontin (gabapentin) slowly, under the guidance of your neurologist. The slower your taper, the less likely you are to experience side effects, which can include tremor, irritability, agitation, anxiety, tachycardia, diaphoresis, confusion, disorientation, catatonia, and status epilepticus. I have been doing research. From clinical trials, seems that lyrica (pregabalin) causes weight gain much more often than neurontin. Yes?
Probably so.: Weight gain listed as mild to moderate for both but Lyrica (pregabalin) appears to be more. As with any medication must weigh the benefits and adverse effects and manage the adverse effects to the extent possible. A good life skills approach is important for everyone, especially if faced with issues like medical conditions and medications, and can assist weight mx and other health parameters. Do drugs like elavil, Lyrica (pregabalin) and Neurontin for nerve pain all work the same or do they have different actions from one another?
I think I have diabetic neuropathy. I think that Lyrica (pregabalin) is used for this. I also read about Neurontin. Which medication is for what exactly?
I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia by 3 different rheumatologists. I have tried Lyrica, Savella, (milnacipran) and Neurontin without relief and/ or side effect?
Non-medical also: An extremely important part of managing fibromyalgia has nothing to do with medications: Because certain exercises have been shown to help the pain substantially, it is worthwhile for people with FM to request a referral to a physical therapist familiar with treating fibromyalgia. Addressing sleep hygiene search HealthTap)is important also - profound sleep deprivation can mimic every symptom of FM. ...Read more
I'm suffering from lyrica (pregabalin) addiction for a year, a pharmacist adviced me to use Neurontin to get rid of lyrica (pregabalin) withdrawls. Would it really help?
Probably.: The drugs are very similar. Pregabalin (lyrica) has some habit forming potential that Neurontin (gabapentin) doesn't appear to have. We use both drugs to treat pain syndromes such as neuropathic pain, post-hermetic neuralgia; fibromyalgia, etc. Talk with your doctor about it. Good luck. ...Read more

Tramadol as long term treatment for fibromyalgia? Cymbalts made me miserable. Cannot afford lyrica, (pregabalin) am already on neurontin. Is this viable treatment
Taking 100 lyrica (pregabalin) for peripheral nerve pain. Heartburn really bad. Ok to keep glugging antiacid? Neurontin did same.
No. Call doctor: Neurontin (gabapentin) is indeed an excellent treatment for peripheral nerve pain. In my practice, it does not cause heartburn. You need to get that checked out promptly. You may have an ulcer, which could worsen. Taking antacids without medical supervision could cause its own set of complications, including decreased absorption of medications. Call your treating physician and get checked. ...Read more
