How are low-carbs diet vs low-calorie diet different?

How are low-carbs diet vs low-calorie diet different?

Protein: Low carbohydrate diets tend to emphasize higher amounts of protein to get into 'ketosis' (not the same as keto-acidosis). This is a 'fat-burning' state. Low carb diets must be low-calorie as well, however, to work. Low calorie-diets alone simply lower overall calorie intake but those calories could be in the form of carbohydrates, protein or fat. ...Read more

Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?

Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?

Does not matter: Since 90% of the cholesterol is produced by the body regardless of your diet, the above would not noticeably affect your cholesterol level. Do note that too much carb may not be good for your health. I don't believe extreme diet does anyone any good. Just eat anything in moderation and exercise at least 3 hrs a week will likely keep you in better shape. ...Read more

Are low carb diets healthier than diets with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean proteins?

Are low carb diets healthier than diets with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean proteins?

Not necessarily: There is no single diet that is best for everyone. I believe it is wise to minimize sugars and simple starches, but i believe a diet with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and low-fat proteins is healthier than a strict low carb diet (which is relatively high in fat and protein). See http://drrandybaker.Com/2013/01/20/diet-and-health/ for my essay on the pros and cons of various diets. ...Read more

What's the benefit of consuming complex carbohydrates (grains mostly) over simple carbohydrates (fruits, veggies)?

What's the benefit of consuming complex carbohydrates (grains mostly) over simple carbohydrates (fruits, veggies)?

You got it backwards: Fruits and veggies are NOT simple carbohydrates! Simple carbohydrates are sugars and foods that easily break down into sugars, such as white flour, white rice, potatoes and juices. These readily raise our blood sugar, which is unhealthy.Complex carbohydrates are found in whole grains, most vegetables and fruits and generally contain fiber. These raise blood sugar less. See http://tinyurl.com/y8f4cagu ...Read more

Need help when on a low carb diet should I be counting net carbs or total carbohydrates?

Low carb diet: Counting net carbs is the correct way to monitor carbohydrate intake, which includes total carbs minus fiber and minus sugar alcohols (if present). But better yet, i just recommend eliminating sweets and starches - simple and very, very effective. One should be realistic, though, and look carefully at those two words.
