Is neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) good for cuts and scrapes?

Is neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) good for cuts and scrapes?

It's okay: No antibiotic is as helpful as cleaning the wound well with soap and water and then keeping it clean. Some people become allergic to the neomycin; you may prefer a bacitracin-only preparation. ...Read more

After my toddler heals do I need to get all the neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) entirely off?

After my toddler heals do I need to get all the neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) entirely off?

Yes: I don't know what your toddler is healing from, but prolonged contact to the neomycin in the neosporin can lead to allergic reactions in the future. So, yes, removing any unneeded cream is a good idea as is using it sparingly to begin with. Plain vaseline or aquaphor will often help heal wounds as well as neosporin without any risk and is what i recommend to my patients post skin surgery. ...Read more

Neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) on acne - helps decrease scarring?

Neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) on acne - helps decrease scarring?

Can do better: No one needs to have bad acne or acne scarring in this day and age. I start folks on cheap topical Clindamycin which usually works; if that fails, cheap systemic tetracycline (kept mine under control for 25 years). A dermatologist can offer you even more potent retinoic acid-related meds, especially if it's cystic acne. You have a choice. ...Read more

Can I use neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) for a dog bite on my forearm?

Depends: If it's just a minor, superficial cut, then probably yes. If a larger gash or bleeding, see a doctor to get it evaluated and stitched. All of this also depends on the dog not having rabies. If you don't know the dog, you need to get evaluated by a doctor and have the dog examined. ...Read more

I have ringworm. Except I cannot rid my body of it. I shower frequently, use topical anti-bacterial cream, even anti-fungal cream. Nothing helps. ?

See a dermatologist: Also could be something else. Not every round or circular rash is a fungal infection. Could be something non-infectious such as psoriasis or nummular eczema. A dermatologist should be able to distinguish between these possibilities and can perform a fungal scaping and/or skin biopsy if necessary to sort things out. ...Read more

I got a razor cut 4 days ago i initially treated it with a anti bacterial cream and gauze a yellow line formed and is gone now with water. Worries?!

Wound: I don't think you need to worry if there is no bleeding, infection, swelling or pain in the wound. The yellow line was a crust and it's gone exposing the wound. You may put another antibacterial cream and a bandade to protect it. ...Read more

The right side of my upper lip got itchy after i ate my lunch. Then, it got swollen. I don't know the cause so i just put an anti bacterial cream.

Allergic reaction: This sounds like an allergic reaction ( angioedema) to something you ate. Swelling of the lip ( angiedema) should never be ignored, since another exposure to the offending agent can cause a more severe allergic reaction. Make an appointment with you physician. Stop antibacterial cream and use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) until seen. ...Read more
