Does a Positive ANA Antibodies, IFA test mean I could have an STD? What STDs are Positive ANA test? Is an ANA Antibody test a standard test for STDs?
Antinuclear antibody: Antinuclear antibody testing is useful for someone with signs and symptoms of an autoimmune disease - anemia, arthritis, kidney disease, inflammation of the heart and lungs. It is not a test for STDs. However, a test for syphilis, the VDRL, was once used as a test for autoimmune disease! Please call your doctor to explain your ANA. Usually they are of no medical significance. ...Read more
I tested positive/treated for strep 5x (rsat), little/no symptoms. Last test was positive, culture was negative. What causes false positive results?
Latent infection?: Some people have recurrent MRSA (multiply-resistant strep aureus) infections that are treated successfully and recur. There is a possibility that they (or you) could be harboring strep in your nose. The sinuses don't have great blood flow, and so may potentially "hide" bacteria. This could explain your odd results. Put bactroban (mupirocin) up your nose daily as a preventive measure, and see what happens. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Yes: There are 2 reasons for this kind of result: (1) a false positive, or (2) early infection before seroconversion. In someone at low risk for HIV without symptoms, another negative WB in 1 month means there's no infection. In someone at risk or with symptoms of acute infection, a viral load can be helpful. The new 4th generation antigen/antibody tests will eliminate this problem. ...Read more

Can pregnancy blood test give false negative. 3 days late, urine test negative and blood test negative too?
See below: False negative & false positive results are testing errors (meaning the test results were wrong). In this case... A "false negative" result means that despite the test being negative, the person actually does have the infection. Lab Error: I would chalk this up to lab error, but in my patients we do not leave it there. There is a much better and more valid test to be done called a western blot test for herpes. This definitive test should have already been offered to you so that you can know for a fact whether you have herpes or not. ...Read more
A bit too early: The exact time for reliable chlamydia testing by NAAT isn't certain, but 3 days probably is a bit early. A negative result would be somewhat reassuring, but probably not conclusive. It would be safer to wait until 5 days or so, unless there is some urgency (e.g. if you have abdominal pain or other symptoms of a complication like PID). ...Read more
Sampling of trich: Well trich can be 'tricky' if I can make such a pun. The issue could be with the quality of the testing... so if your male partner is testing negative, it might be that either a) he didn't have it or b) the sample collected was not sufficient. It could also be that in your case c) perhaps it wasn't trich. I've seen that on rare occasions. Best thing to do is talk to your doc- maybe a couples visit ...Read more
Possible: The elisa test can be affected by different infections, causing a false-positive result. After any positive elisa, a follow-up test is performed by a 'western blot' which takes longer to perform, but gives a more sensitive answer. If you or someone you know had a positive HIV by elisa, they absolutely need the follow-up testing (including a full std/sti work up). ...Read more
