Maybe: Fluid that accumulated behind the ears can thicken to the point it may not drain.During the process of inserting tubes, they usually remove this thickened debris with vacuum cleaner like tools. The tubes allow a bypass for new fluid to escape while swollen middle ear tissue recovers. It is more traditional to use in small kids, but might help an adult.A consult with an ENT can help you decide ...Read more

Can fluid get in inner ears like it can in middle ear? If so, how does dr diagnose inner ear fluid.

Can fluid get in inner ears like it can in middle ear? If so, how does dr diagnose inner ear fluid.

Middle vs inner?: Not sure what you mean here. The ear canal is open to the outside, so every time you bath, shower, swim, are in the rain, etc, fluid can enter the ear canal. The tympanic membrane[tm]) ear drum, stops any fluid from getting into the inner ear (which some people may call the middle ear). Using an otoscope, a dr. Can tell with reasonable certainty if "fluid" is behind the tm, and decide any tx needs. ...Read more

Slowly: Decongestants are appropriate, alone or with new generation antihistamines. However, nothing helps dramatically and it can take some time to fully recover. Smoking is a direct negative factor by irritating the throat opening of eustachian tube. Increased fluids are also appropriate. There are adults, very infrequently, with tubes when problem persists with nothing helping. ...Read more

How can you eliminate chronic fluid build up behind eardrum. What causes this in 6 year olds not a swimmer, no sinus respiratory issues, ongoing since january fluid won't go away, we have had 9 trips to pediatrician with either ear infection or just fluid

Chronic : Chronic ear fluid is a common problem for a lot of kids. Because the eustachian tube (the tube that drains the ear into the throat) is narrow and winding in kids, it can often stop draining properly and cause chronic fluid or frequent ear infections. The good news is that as children grow, the tubes grow also becoming wider and straighter to allow for proper drainage for most adults. The bad news is that this doesn't happen overnight. Since there are no medications shown to alleviate the pressure or drain the fluid from behind the ear drum, it has to be done with a suction and/or ear tubes. You can try giving Motrin or tylenol (acetaminophen) for the ear discomfort, but the fluid will either have to drain out on its own (unlikely given your son's history) or drain out when the tube is placed. Can a myringotomy worsen existing tinnitus (cause unknown)? Myringotomy to alleviate excruciating ear pressure

2 questions: Myringotomy can not have an effect on tinnitus unless you have middle ear fluid. Tinnitus is now considered a central (brain synchronicity problem). The pressure question again can only answered by the middle ear being full of thick fluid causing pressure and hearing loss. Middle ear fluid rarely causes excruciating ear pressure unless you have pus under pressure. You need accurate diagnosis. ...Read more
