No medication: Although doctors have tried medications thinking these could be related to OCD, there hasn't been much success. The language is due to problems developing original speech, so she relies on phrases that somehow connected with her. The behaviors can be related to sensory needs, a means of self calming or a means of understanding their body and world. Speech and OT can help expand her skills. ...Read more

It's not helpful: The point of speech/language therapy for kids with ASD is not only to increase expressive language, it's to increase social communication, conversational turn-taking in real life situations with real human beings whose emotional & verbal response are neither scripted nor always expected. Autistic 8 year old boy has brother (5 years) with speech impairment, their cousin (6 years) is hyperlexic. Do you recommend any genetic testing?
No: There are probably genetic factors in all of these, but these are polygenic. Hyperlexic kids often do very well in life. You won't find a single locus mutated that will inform a decision about preventing more children like this from being born. Genetic testing is for major, catastrophic illnesses like cystic fibrosis or muscular dystrophy -- single-gene diseases. ...Read more
