Neck Tingles When Breastfeeding
22 5'8 148 lbs 3 1/2 months postpartum I keep having numbing tingling sensation in left arm radiating to neck chest pain and hot flashes I breastfeed?
No worries: Congratulations on the baby Allison. Unfortunately they can reek havoc on your body. I would recommend you start with the basic moist heat, massage & lymphatic drainage of that left arm. Carpal Tunnel syndrome is a distinct possibility. Try a cock up splint. You may need an MRI of your C-Spine if not improving. I wouldn't worry about the vasomotor symptoms. They will resolve with time. Common! ...Read more

I have constant neck and mid back pain. I am breastfeeding a 7mon and would like too know what is the strongest med I can take that won't hurt him?
See below.: My general rule of thumb is this: any medication that's safe for a baby given his age, is also safe for the breastfeeding mom. So Motrin (ibuprofen) and tylenol (acetaminophen) are safe. Consider non-medication relief like heat and gentle stretching. If these measures don't work, please contact your physician. ...Read more
I'm a breastfeeding mom. When I look down at nursing baby I feel a sharp pain in neck that shots up the back of my head. What ciukd cause this?
Irritated nerve?: If there is pain, tingling, numbness, or electrical sensations felt when a person moves her head or neck in a particular direction, she may be irritating or compressing a nerve coming out of the spinal cord. A neurologist or a physiatrist (physical medicine and rehabilitation) doctor can figure out the problem and start therapy. Sometimes neck x-rays and / or MRI are needed. ...Read more

Can a CT scan of the neck without contrast give meaningful information on a lump? I am breastfeeding.
Yes: It can definitely help. A ct with contrast is better. If you're worried about breast feeding with the contrast, its not an issue. The amount that is actually eventually absorbed by the baby from the stomach is extremely small. Much less than we give babies actually getting a ct scan. ...Read more
I am breastfeeding, tired and very stressed. I have intermittent facial tingling and once arm tingling. Blood tests are normal. What could it be?
Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor and discuss if you may be depressed. Post-partum depression is not uncommon. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity at tolerated. ...Read more

May need strep test: Sore throat and tonsillitis symptoms usually are evaluated by a rapid strep test in addition to an exam. If there are strep germs, antibiotics such as Amoxil (amoxicillin) or Zithromax are needed. Sometimes tonsils get whitish mucousy stuff on them. A patient can call around town to see if there is a new PCP who can fit her in within 48 hours. Going online to her insurance's website can bring up a PCP list. ...Read more

What's the cause?: An equally important question is what is the cause for your itchy throat? If allergies, perhaps environmental prevention may prove useful--and not medication. If sinus infection, then an antibiotic may be required. As always, your pediatrician or ob-gyn is your best source to advise you for safe and effective treatment while breastfeeding. In the meantime, suck on a popsicle for temporary relief! ...Read more

Nursing: Estrogen levels drop while you are nursing (that's why the vagina is very dry in a nursing mother). Patients often experience the other symptoms of low estrogen, including hot flushes and night sweats. It may take several weeks for your body to 'bounce back' after you stop nursing. Give it a few more weeks. If no improvement, see your healthcare provider. ...Read more

My throat has been hurting for a day now, was wanting to know if I can take theraflu while breastfeeding? Also is it safe for the baby to breastfeed w
Ok but short course:
Assuming the medication is Theraflu flu & sore throat. It contains 3 ingredients- acetaminophen, phenylephrine and pheniramine.
Acetaminophen is safe. Small amounts of pheniramine can pass to breast milk and baby may be restless or sleepy
Phenylephrine could decrease lactation
However recent studies seem to ok

Depends on the cause: If you have a pretty bad sore throat associated with fever, red throat, rash, or other symptoms, see your doctor. If it is just a scratchy sore throat in the morning that goes away pretty quickly in the day, then any thing that is moisturizing is fine-liquids, honey, sore throat lozenges, etc. If it is due to allergies, treat it like you would any allergy. Most otc anti-histamines are safe. ...Read more

A 2-year-old I babysit for has strep throat. I'm due to sit on Friday, and I usually bring my breastfeeding 8 month old along. Is it safe to do so?
Okay if cautious: If the kid is treated with some form of penicillin s/he should not be contageous after 24 hrs. The germ is passed when active in the saliva. Simply following good hand washing and keeping the two separated should be adequate to reduce any possibility of spread to you or baby. ...Read more
Vague question: We generally avoid salycelates and prefer Acetaminophen as a medicine for comfort if throat lozenges or menthol gum is not adequate. Antihistamine and decongestant containing cough meds can reduce your milk volume, so simple mucolytics are preferred. Baby was exposed to the germ before you became symptomatic, so s/he will either get it or not based on their tolerance to the germ. ...Read more
Can a baby "catch" hashimotos by breastfeeding from his mom w/ hypothyroidism by ingesting the thyroid antibodies in the milk?
Not well studied: This topic is not well studied - a search of medical literature on pubmed does not reveal any case studies or evidence of transfer of autoimmune thyroid antibodies.
