Virus: You gave symptoms of a viral, infection. The best thing you can do at this time is to stay hydrated, drink lots of fluids, eat moderately. Things like chicken soup are good. Use ibuprophen or tylenol (acetaminophen) to help with the pain. See a doctor if you are getting worse or do not start to feel better in a day or two. ...Read more

Many poss. causes : Given your age, degenerative causes predominate. I'll assume you did not suffer a trauma to your neck. Infection could also cause neck pain but much less commonly, mostly IV drug users. Best thing is to see a specialist in non-operative spine care. See below: The fact that you woke up with neck pain suggests it may be related to the position of your neck when you sleep. This may be causing muscle strain or a pinched nerve in the neck. Don't sleep with head elevated on too many pillows and try changing pillows or try a cervical pillow which are available online or in stores. OTC analgesics for pain. Soft cervical collar may help. Is there any way to know if neck pain is meningitis? it hurts when I'm still, move side to side and down. I've had it for 3 days now

See a doctor: The best thing to do is get professional help. Sometimes neck pain is just 'muscle pain' brought about by stress, studying in a fixed position, etc. The meninges - which are coverings over the spinal cord, could be inflamed however-and there are certain tests a doctor can do.
