I get pretty bad muscle pain in my shoulders, neck and back whenever I drink alcohol. It happens shortly after I drink, like within an hour. Why?
Going out on a limb: I live in a tree, so this is what I do. The serious answer is some people get breakdown of muscle tissue with alcohol (rhabdomyolysis). Less serious answer is that drinking allows your brain to go to places where it doesn't normally go and you become uncomfortable and tighten the shoulder girdle muscles. This is a common place for people to place their stress. ...Read more

Abstain: Sorry, but the clear answer to this question is simple. Don't drink in excess. Better yet, don't drink alcohol. The health benefits are minimal, and the risks go far beyond head, neck, and back pain. Just like mom used to say, "if it hurts when you do that, then don't do that.". ...Read more

Interesting, No: "Is that normal": No. But, what is the mechanism? Not clear. Both sides, back of neck? Any other muscle involvement? If both sides and no other symptoms then maybe stress issues associated with drinking. Do you get migraine or tension headaches? If one side then maybe something to do with how you sleep. If other symptoms then possibilities expand. ...Read more
