to lose weight, you must exercise regularly. start a weight training program. also a good way to lose weight is running and becoming more physically active. also have a healthier diet. avoid all sodas and only drink water. avoid fatty snacks with sugars and instead have fruits and veggies as snacks.

The neck is composed of 7 vertebra. They don't lengthen or shorten. Perception of a short neck is from added muscle mass or adipose tissue in obese people. If you are exercising to build a lot of muscle, it might appear as if the the neck shortens. On the other hand, if you are exercising to lose weight, it may appear as if your neck will lengthen.

Be careful

Be careful with neck strengthening as they can make neck problems worse. Working with a PT or trainer who is trained on this area of the body can be very beneficial. Resisted motion using a towel (bending forward, backward, to each side) can be used - trainers know how much tension to put on the towel. Rolling the neck is almost never a good thing - alwas return to neural before bending again.

Postural exercises

There is no one exercise that is best for the neck. For most people, there are a few that are helpful depending on if the exercises are being done for prevention or treatment of injuries. A physical therapist can teach you how to isolate the deep flexors and extensors. Postural alignment exercises (i.e. chin tuck maneuver) are part of a functional prevention and treatment regimen.

Proper posture

Proper posture is needed because no amount of exercise will help stresses on the neck related to posture issues. Exercise can help. Your head weighs an average of 12 lbs. Imagine holding a 12 lb weight with your arm straight out away from your body rather than against your body for a period of time. No matter how strong that arm is, it will fatigue faster with the weight away from your body!

Neck strengthening, range of motion and stretching are all important. However, these should be appropriate and not haphazard. Ask your primary to send you to physical therapy for a few sessions to teach you a home exercise program. If you have ben cleared, here is a site with some decent exercises:

Neck flexion and extension against resistance. Shoulder shrugs, rowing and lateral flexion left and right, of the neck, are good starters to develop neck muscle strength.
