What other antibiotics are there instead of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for Renal Infections? Experiencing kidney pain but on Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim).
Renal infections: Hi Annie. There are many antibiotics that are available to treat genito-urinary infections (kidney infections). The antibiotic is generally selected based on the bacteria that may have been seen on the urine culture, the susceptibilities of the antibiotic to the bacteria and how much of the selected antibiotic is effectively delivered to the kidney and urine. ...Read more
Im taking the antibiotic Cipro (ciprofloxacin) for a UTI. Im having stomach bloating and gas from the Cipro (ciprofloxacin). What can i eat/take to help the upset stomach?
Probiotics: You could consider taking probiotics products like kefir - which is inexpensive and readily available in most markets. Twice a day with meals while you are on antibiotics and a few days after antibiotics is done. ...Read more

Will omnicef work on kidney infection? Was switched to omnicef from bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds because of rash and shaking.
Probably OK, but...: Bad luck with the allergic reactions. Antibiotic effectiveness for any infection depends on the bacteria causing it and which antibiotics are active against it. If you had a positive urine culture that was tested and found susceptible to cefdinir (Omnicef®), it will work well. If such testing wasn't done, you'll have to wait and see how it works. Discuss with the doc who prescribed it. Good luck! ...Read more

Taking bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and flagyl for diverticulitis. Horrible nasuea, headache and chest discomfort, body aches and just feel sick. Should i stop the med?
No: While nausea is a common adverse effect of almost any medication, the other symptoms you describe are not likely to be caused by these antibiotics. They could be caused by worsening infection, but an exam is necessary to make that determination. Seeing a doctor (preferably the prescribing doc) without delay is important in this situation. ...Read more

Took clindamycin in December, and recently had salmonella infection and took cipro (ciprofloxacin). Now having lower abdominal/suprapubic achiness/soreness. Related?
Abdominal pain: Generally, cipro (ciprofloxacin) is used for salmonella infections only in those that are immunocompromised, as antibiotics can prolong the carrier course of salmonella. So there is a possibility you still have the infection. There is also a possibility there is something else going on as well, i.e. UTI, yeast infection, clostridium dificile, etc. I recommend you see your doctor for some additional testing. ...Read more
