Is the nutritional supplement Ultra Potent-C®, made by Metagenics, bioequivalent to vitamin C from food sources?
Bioavailability vs..: Bioavailability may vary depending on the source of your vitamin supplement. Potency and purity however play significant roles in the efficacy of the supplement, regardless of source. Find the cheapest vitamin that approaches 100% rdu (recommended daily allowance) and save money over "natural source" ones. There are of course significant benefits from eating healthy foods in general. ...Read more
Is the quality of vitamins and minerals from supplements equal to those obtained naturally by eating fruit, veg.?
Effects may differ: The vitamins and minerals in supplements are synthesized forms of what is found in food. The problem with depending on supplements rather than eating a balanced diet is that a lot is not known about how the nutrients in foods interact with each other to nourish our bodies. And those interactions cannot (yet) be duplicated in pill form. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Not really: Good nutrition comes from nutrients in whole foods. With that said, many fruits, vegetables and foods don't necessarily supply the body with all the nutrients that it needs. For example, once a fruit or vegetable is cut from its own nutritious source, the vine or tree, etc, it begins to slowly lose some of its nutrients. This is why taking vitamins and even supplements may not be a bad idea. ...Read more
Not exactly : Just like you can use wood to build many different styles of houses, but you would not consider a pile of wood and a house to be the same thing, you use Amino acids to build proteins. Some, but not all: Some homeopathic medicines are made from plants. Some are also made from mineral and animal substances -- so all three major kingdoms are involved. Homeopathic medicines are prepared very differently from herbal tinctures, though. The process allows them to affect living systems at the level of energy -- which humans share with every other thing in the universe. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Essentially All: Vitamins are just simple helper molecules present in nearly all foods to extent humans have not maintained every gene/protein needed to make them out of whatever other molecules. Their role is helping specific protein enzymes facilitate specific chemical reactions to progress rapidly at body temp which are otherwise inordinately slow. Great question!: I'm going to assume you mean, "How do our bodies make our vitamins?", not "How are vitamin supplements manufactured?' The answer is, we don't! A nutritional source of vitamins is essential because (1) our bodies can't make these molecules and (2) these molecules are ESSENTIAL for our health & well-being. Except during pregnancy, most people get adequate vitamins simply from eating healthfully. ...Read more
