My friends's GERD is going from bad to worse. What can he do for relief?

Medication: There are some easy solutions to help with gerd. If your friend is not on medication, they can try any over the counter meds to decrease acid. Also, the 3 common causes of gerd are caffiene, alcohol and nicotine. Try to eat early, and avoid coffee, alcohol and cigarettes. You could also elevate the head of the bed 4 inches. If nothing helps your friend, they should see a gastroenterologist. ...Read more

I take dexliant 60mg at night for gerd. I have flair ups and was wondering if it was ok to take maalox for faster relief when the flair ups happen.

Be observant: Maalox contains aluminum which can complex with phosphate. Plain calcium carbonate like tums or sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can both neutralize stomach acid. It is useful to determine what triggers flares and avoid the triggers. Sometimes doing moves to treat hiatal hernia prevents the need for anti-acids. Eating small frequent meals helps as well. ...Read more

Is it recommended to take Prilosec in the morning and Zantac (ranitidine) at night for complete acid relief of GERD?

Is it recommended to take Prilosec in the morning and Zantac (ranitidine) at night for complete acid relief of GERD?

See your doctor.: If you are initially treating presumed acid reflux, Prilosec 20 mg once each morning about 20 minutes before eating any food is a good start. If it does not completely relieve your symptoms after two weeks, however, or if they recur after stopping the Prilosec, then I would seek out treatment long term through your family doctor. Anti-reflux measures are important too. Good luck. ...Read more

Can I take pepcid (famotidine) for breakthrough relief of GERD, if I take prilosec 20mg twice a day? If so, what's the best time to take it?

Can I take pepcid (famotidine) for breakthrough relief of GERD, if I take prilosec 20mg twice a day? If so, what's the best time to take it?

Yes and no: I like Pepcid (famotidine) with your PPI for daily use but for occasional (as needed) use, I recommend Pepcid (famotidine) Complete. It works faster that Pepcid (famotidine) alone thanks to the rapid acting antacid that comes with the Pepcid (famotidine) tablet. ...Read more

Diagnosed with GERD and not getting relief from protonix (pantoprazole) 40mg 2x/day. Was prescribed Metoclopramide syrup. Can I take the syrup with the protonix (pantoprazole)?

Diagnosed with GERD and not getting relief from protonix (pantoprazole) 40mg 2x/day. Was prescribed Metoclopramide syrup. Can I take the syrup with the protonix (pantoprazole)?

Reconsider this Rx: Metaclopramide (Reglan) is a pro-motility agent to improve esophageal and stomach emptying. However, please read the side effect profile of this medication--it may make you reconsider using it casually, especially if to be taken over a long period of time, and at several times daily. Is GERD your only indication for the drug? ...Read more

Gastrologist here prescriped me renditine 150 for 2 Wks for GERD, I started it & Now I feel cheast pain reliefed by making gas or stool, wht to take?

Ranitidine/gas: Tell your doctor, he may want to switch to a PPI like prilosec or prevecid. The effects you are feeling are related to reflux/ gastritis for which ranitidine should work but everyone is different. maalox helps occasionally but has magnesium so can't take too much and for significant pain need a PPI or rantidine H2 blocker. Alos check for H pylori ...Read more
