What cures illness faster? Such as fever, cold and flu. Medicines or home remedies?

Both medications and home remedies only give you symptomatic relief. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) has been shown to shorten the flu for about 24 hours, but i've not been impressed with this medication and it is only effective if taken withing the first 24 hours since the onset. ...Read more

How to deal with a cold while pregnant? Any natural remedies or medicines that are safe?

Salt water: The best and safest remedy is saline, or salt water. Nasal saline or sinus rinses work in two ways. First, they rinse out the virus particles out of your nose so you can clear the infection faster. They also pull the fluid out of your swollen nasal tissues in a process called osmosis. I also recommend Pseudoephedrine and antihistamines to my patients; check with your doctor for specifics. ...Read more

Help please! is anyone else out there worried about giving cold medicine to children?

Sure: Every single medicine has risks and benefits. If the risk does not outweigh the benefit, you should not use the medicine. As far as cold meds, they have a lot of side effects, especially in kids. The benefits are limited, as no medicine is going to cure a cold. It just might reduce symptom a bit. So using alternative treatments like warm fluids, humidity and saline rinse much better way to go. ...Read more

A few helpful things: If your child is miserable with a cold, it's hard not doing anything. However, no treatments stop a cold, they just help with symptoms. My pediatrician says it's okay to give cold medicine to my kids when they are over 2, but I'm reading that it isn't recommended? So is it safe or not?

Safe vs helpful: As in everything in medicine it is always a question of weighing risk versus benefit. Since everyone agrees that there are no cures for the common cold the that you are trying to do is make your child feel better. The other point is that most cold mess are irrational combinations of drugs that act at cross purposes to each other and have been grandfathered in. So safe but useless. ...Read more
