Help please! is anyone else out there worried about giving cold medicine to children?

Sure: Every single medicine has risks and benefits. If the risk does not outweigh the benefit, you should not use the medicine. As far as cold meds, they have a lot of side effects, especially in kids. The benefits are limited, as no medicine is going to cure a cold. It just might reduce symptom a bit. So using alternative treatments like warm fluids, humidity and saline rinse much better way to go. ...Read more

At what age can I give my child cough and cold medicine?

At what age can I give my child cough and cold medicine?

Better to wait: The american academy of pediatrics has positioned against cold and cough medications for children, because the side effects of the medications far outweigh the benefit. They do not treat the cold virus. Unfortunately we are all susceptible to these viral illnesses which last 2-5 days, while the cough may persist a few additional day beyond. Stay patient and check with your pediatrician if needed. ...Read more

Almost all of the 'cold' medicines out there will make kids drowsy, although some have opposite effect on certain kids and make wild! ...Read more

My pediatrician says it's okay to give cold medicine to my kids when they are over 2, but I'm reading that it isn't recommended? So is it safe or not?

Safe vs helpful: As in everything in medicine it is always a question of weighing risk versus benefit. Since everyone agrees that there are no cures for the common cold the that you are trying to do is make your child feel better. The other point is that most cold mess are irrational combinations of drugs that act at cross purposes to each other and have been grandfathered in. So safe but useless. ...Read more
