What are the means by which calcium channel blockers work?

What are the means by which calcium channel blockers work?

Ca blockers: They block the channel which gets calcium into cells so that the calcium needed for smooth muscle function is blocked resulting in decreased vascular resistance.

What types of conditions are cured by calcium channel blockers?

None really: Calcium channel blockers do not actually cure any heart disease but are usually used to control the heart rate or the rhythm. In some patients who have abnormal circuits within the heart's electrical system it can keep the rhythm in check but does not actually fix the problem. Catheter ablation is a procedure used to "cure" the problem. With atrial fibrillation it can be used to control the rate.

Calcium blockers.: The side effect of fatigue is experienced with almost every drug. This is because we also see it with placebo. The incidence of fatigue with those drugs isn't significantly higher than with most other drugs however.

What are some long term negative side effects of calcium channel blockers?

Too broad an answer: Ther are 3 major types of calcium channel blockers and each has unique effects and side effects. The common thing about them is that by its molecular action they relax smooth muscles otherwise they are completely different from each other and sometimes have opposite effects. One lowers the heart beat the other increases it. Constipation is common in one but not in others.Gum swelling in one etc

If I take calcium channel blockers, am I increasing my chance of osteoporosis later in life?

If I take calcium channel blockers, am I increasing my chance of osteoporosis later in life?

No: You are probably concerned that the drug may reduce your absorption of dietary calcium. This is definitely not true of the most common generic, verapamil, and unlikely to be true of any of this drug class. If you wish to have a copy of the relevant literature, send me a request. The calcium pump, which absorbs the nutrient, differs from the channel these drugs block.

I take lisnopril 40 mg., and atenolol 50 mg. Should I be on a calcium-channel blockers instead?

Hypertension: Both lisinopril, ace inhibitor ; atenelol, beta blocker are good drugs for treatment of high blood pressure. If you have no side effects from these drugs ; your blood pressure is well controlled than you don't have to change to calcium channel blockers.

How are calcium channel blockers and beta blockers different?

Blockers: The cell membranes have receptor sites (like plug outlets)for various drugs. The calcium blockers block the calcium channel plugs and the beta blockers block the beta receptor plugs. Each drug type has different effects but both lower blood pressure and have other effects.

What does calcium channel blockers do and how do they affect the heart?

What does calcium channel blockers do and how do they affect the heart?

BP and heart rate: calcium channels are channels located in cell membranes in blood vessels and heart muscle. Blocking their activity can have a blood pressure lowering effect, and certain of the calcium channel blockers slow the heart rate as well. There are 3 broad categories of these meds represented by diltiazem, verapamil, and nifedipine.

What's the difference between calcium channel blockers and beta blockers?

Name says it all: Calcium channel blockers block the channel that allows vascular tone to increase and lowers blood pressure. The beta blockers work on beta recetors on the vessels to lower pressure. The heart has both beta receptors and calcium channels. Therefore betablockers and some calcium channel blockers can slow the heart rate as well.
