So...I take nattokinase and raw garlic (2-3 cloves a day). Is this likely to affect a D dime result significantly i.e. making it a false negative?
Not likely: The D-dimer test has a very high sensitivity (about 95%) so the likelihood of false negative is very low. Glover and nattokinase does not affect the sensitivity to anyone's knowledge. ...Read more
I am looking for an informed answer regarding the use of nattokinase and its effect on a D dimer. Could the use of nattokinase provide a false negative d dimer due to its affect on fdp?
Animal Study Data: Study of thrombosis in rats using Nattokinase as thrombolysis agent showed elevation of FDP and D Dimer levels suggesting thrombolytic effect of Nattokinase. Xu J, et al. Acta Haematology 2014 No known studies on direct effect on human D Dimer levels. Dr R ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Would long term use result in false negative D dimers? Due to nattokinase effects on FDP.
May be a theoretical response, which is fine.
Interesting question: Nattokinase is a protease, a family of chemicals that facilitates the breakdown of proteins. Studies suggest it works (1) by inhibiting platelet clumping & fibrin formation and (2) by dissolving clots which INCREASES FDP. In theory, it's more likely to produce a false (+) d-Dimer than a false (-). But the magnitude of this effect probably isn't clinically relevant either way. Probably not safe: Nattokinase has fibrinolytic activity which is a different mechanism than warfarin which is a vitamin k antagonist interfering with synthesis of prothombin and factor vii. The combination is likely synergistic. The product label clearly states they should not be used together and i don't doubt that the combination would increase the risk of pathological bleeding including intracranial hemorrhage. ...Read more
NO: Nattokinase is said to be of value for vascular and cardiac issues. Suppose if a patient had a dementia due to small strokes in addition or instead of alzheimer's approach might be considered, but this preparation does not seem to provide any real benefit for the true alzheimer's patient. ...Read more
64 yr male, active, on coumadin. Hate the negative issues with c. Want to take nattokinase. Research not ready, i am. Risks seem greater with c.?
Please don't : I understand Coumadin is a hassle & extra bruising is not glamorous, however, you are on it for a reason (stroke prevention most commonly). The last 2 patients i had stop Coumadin in favor of nattokinase had strokes. Want an alternative to coumadin? Talk to your md about Pradaxa or xarelto. ...Read more
Obscure: Nattokinase is an enzyme that is derived from the fermentation of soybeans (natto). Natto has been used as a folk remedy for cardiovascular disease for hundreds of years. Nattokinase is likely safe when used in amounts commonly found in foods but the safety of taking larger amounts is unknown. Taking nattokinase along with pharmaceutical anticoagulants can be dangerous. ...Read more
