Nasal Swab For Pertussis
Child strep and bad mucous cough. Antibiotics for 3 days still has fever. Doc prescribed claritin nasal spray and inhaler for rhonchi, why claritin?
Good question: I am not aware of a nasal spray containing Claritin. Even then it would not have done that much for nasal congestion or the cough That the fever is still present after 3 days of antibiotic points more to a viral infection which often causes coughing and wheezing in children especially before age 3. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Can a nasal steroid spray mask the symptoms of a bacterial infection? Treated for allergy for 1 yr, but mucus sample shows Pseudomonas Aeruginosa.
Yes, if you: use it too much or too often. Now you have a bacterial infection that hopefully will respond to antibiotics, but you can also get fungus or other atypical infections. Antibiotics will not help these. You need to consult with an ENT specialist for definitive treatment. Surgery might be necessary. ...Read more

Swollen turbinates for last 6 months. Dx vasomotor Rhinitis. Positive nasal swab for Coag Negative staph. Could this be cause of Vasomotor Rhinitis?
Definitely not: A culture like that is essentially useless. Staph CN organisms in this setting are 'just along for the ride' and have nothing to do with your sinus disease. That might have been different if a true pathogen was found (like Strep) but I'm pretty sure this is just what we call 'normal flora'. The sinuses are not a sterile place, so there are ordinary bacteria there. I would seek more about ALLERGY. ...Read more

More info needed: Pseudomonas and Candida often appear when normal bacteria are suppressed by antibiotics. Have you been taking antibiotics, maybe for your stuffy nose and cough? Or have you been hospitalized recently? If you are otherwise healthy, chest xray normal (no pneumonia), and you don't have severe bronchitis, probably these results can be ignored. Discuss with your doctor or infectious disease specialist. ...Read more
