Nasal Irrigation Ear Infection
There are three different types of ear infections that affect different areas of the ear. Outer ear infection (Otitis externa) affects the ear canal and the outside part of the ear. Middle ear infection (Otitis media) affects the middle ear and leads to fluid accumulation behind the ear drum. Inner ear infection (Otitis interna) is a less common inflammation of the inner ear that causes vertigo, ...Read more
Enhance: While a true sinus infection is best treated with antibiotics, there is data that one can enhance the resolution of symptoms by adding an intra-nasal steroid spray. This addition is probably most helpful in patients who have some nasal congestion on an allergic basis. The use of an intra-nasal decongestant may also be helpful in the first few days of treatment to enhance drainage. ...Read more

Can anti-histamine + nasal irrigation + Cromolyn Sodium spray help reduce chronic nasal turbinate, nasopharynx inflammation & mucus membrane swelling?
Probably helpful: Might use saline irrigation over drops, although some controversy. My patients have found it useful.Several things contribute to chronic sinus problems. Most issues are not truly infections, but usually more congestion. Avoid smoking and smoke exposure, explore allergies, consider nasal saline irrigation, and avoiding dairy products for 2 weeks (most adults have some version of milk allergy). ...Read more

How do you get fluid out of your ear after an ear infection? I used a nasal spray but it isn't working. What else can I do?

2 months after my ear infection my hearing is blocked, I have tinnitus and nasal spray didn't work. What should I do?
Is it possible for a nonmedicated saline nasal spray to get stuck in the nasal cavity and cause of ear infection in a five-year-old?
Ear infection causes: Ear infections are caused by bacteria or viruses. Noses are full of bacteria anyway. Saline rinses away a few bacteria; if the bottle is dirty, saline may add a few bacteria to the nose, but they won't often travel to the ear because the Eustachian tube is a tiny passage, esp in children. Droplets of water sprayed in nose are only in the nose a few minutes. Squeeze bottle irrigation CAN hurt ears. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can Hypersal in nebulizer be used for nasal congestion? Saline solution hasn't helped 5mo & she keeps getting ear infections due to persistent cong
Increases congestion: Hypersal is a solution of salt water similar in saltiness to ocean water. It is nearly four times as salty as the solution that bathes all the cells in your body. It acts as a potent irritant. When inhaled it makes you cough and you bring up mucous. When placed in the nose it will make you sneeze. The irritation caused by this degree of saltiness may induce reflex nasal congestion. Not a good idea ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Had a really bad right ear infection 2 months ago, my right cheek bone a little swollen, tooth like pain, fluid in ear, post nasal drip, what's going?
Possible sinus: The way I read your question-it seems you had an ear issue 2 months ago(which presumably cleared),and now have additional symptoms on the right. You may currently have a sinus infection. Sinus issues can cause pain with Eustachian tube dysfunction so there may be a connection with your previous problem. Heat and antiinflammatories can help with pain. See MD to evaluate for possible antibiotic ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I'm 36 y/o & have had 4 or 5 inner ear infections this year. My doc has suggested I get grommets. What are the pros & cons. Also have nasal polyps with about 5 ops over a 15 year period?
Inner ear infection!: you probably meant 'middle ear infections' and Grommet tubes are meant to ventilate /drain the middle ears in case the Eustachian tubes are blocked. You also have nasal polyps that were surgically removed 5 x before, all this points towards chronic inflammation, ? allergic, in your upper airways, kindly see an allergist, if you have access to one, Grommets will just be temporizing, good luck ...Read more
Pelargonium sidoides (umcka). Does it really work to heal or speed up throat, nasal, bronchial, even ear infections? Or one more than the others.
My 15yo son took Augmentin for 10 days for a sinus and double ear infection.. just finished 10 day course and he is coughing with nasal and ear congestion again. No fever.. what should we do. He has a script for Flonase, says it doesn't help. Suggestion
Still congested: With sinus infections, it is important to decongest to remove the mucous that caused the infection in the first place. Flonase can help reduce swelling of the nasal turbinates, but it doesn't clear the mucous. I would recommend one of the antihistamine/pseudoephedrine products sure as Claritin D or Zyrtec D 12 hr. They will clear his congestion as the Augmentin does not. ...Read more

Does this sound like a cold or ear infection and should I take him to see a doctor now? 2 year old boy with nasal, and eye drainage and his external ear is completley red with having no injury to his ear. His nose is stopped up but he seems to be playing
It : It is not common for the external ear to be affected with a middle ear infection (the kind of ear infection you get with colds). An outer ear infection (swimmer's ear) can cause redness and drainage, but is fairly painful. Eye drainage, however, can be a sign of middle ear infection. Since he is 2 years old and may not be able to tell you if his ear feels different, you should give his doctor a call and have him checked out. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can ear tubes help with Eustachian tube dysfunction? I have tried decongestants, nasal steroids, etc. Ear infections and hearing loss continue. Help!
Maybe: Fluid that accumulated behind the ears can thicken to the point it may not drain.During the process of inserting tubes, they usually remove this thickened debris with vacuum cleaner like tools. The tubes allow a bypass for new fluid to escape while swollen middle ear tissue recovers. It is more traditional to use in small kids, but might help an adult.A consult with an ENT can help you decide ...Read more

Ive been sick on & off for the last month w/ sinus & ear infections. Yesterday, I went to bed w/ the worst post nasal drip & woke up with the most HORRIBLE sore throat of my life that isn't going away! Dr called in Clarithromycin. What else can I do?
Control nose: The sinus and ear infections are most likely from obstruction of their openings from the allergic rhinitis. The most important step is to decongest the nose (nasal steroid) so that these organs can drain. Just antibiotic alone will not likely provide long-term relief. See an allergist if this has been a recurrent problem. ...Read more
I've been sick for about six weeks with a ear infection and a cold and today when i woke up i blew my nose and blood and thick mucus came out .
I went to wipe my nose and when i push my nose to the left i get a slight pain in my left ear. I know this isn't normal. Sign of ear infection maybe?
Makes sense: The interior and exterior of the nose is innervated by the trigeminal nerve which also transmits sensation from the outer surface of the ear drum. So when you move the nose it is sensed by these branches and refers to the ear. It is unusual but makes sense. If it becomes more consistent then suggest good ENT exam to make sure nothing else is going on inside nose. ...Read more
