Having deviated septum surg, turbinate reduc. , sinus balloon dilation. When should I stop taking otc nasal decongestants (benzedrex, etc.)?

Nasal surgery : You should ask these questions to your surgeon as she/he may have particular preferences. Hopefully, you have not been using topical nasal decongestant sprays, as they should not be used long term and not before nasal surgery. Oral decongestants can be taken up to the day of surgery, if needed. ...Read more

What is the difference between the nasal and oral medications for allergies?

What is the difference between the nasal and oral medications for allergies?

Risk/benefit ratio: In general, nasal medicines are more effective with less risk of side effects. This is partly because they are applied only to the area that is a problem, the nose. However, some people don't like nasal sprays, and teaching is needed to use them most effectively. Oral medicines are quick and easy, but the medicine goes throughout the body, even to places it's not needed. ...Read more

My sinus problem never persist even after my nasal opetation. I have to rely on oral medication for certain time. What is the best cure?

It depends: From what I gather, you still have sinus problems after sinus surgery. Very broadly, persistent allergies, smoking, possible need for revision surgery, problems with the immune system, ongoing exposure to germs (e.g. Kindergarten teachers), and a tendency for sinus polyps to regrow are possibilities. Rarely is surgery a total "cure, " so it is important to follow up or maybe get a second opinion. ...Read more

What medication would be ok to take for nasal congestion while on 13mcg tirosint?

Treat your allergy: The dose of thyroid medication you are on does not limit medications for your nose. Start with irrigating your nose with saline. If your nose is acutely congested, you can use a nasal decongestant such as oxymetazloline (Afrin) for 3-4 days. You need to use a nasal steroid for the long haul. OTC Nasacort (triamcinolone) is available, all others are by prescription. Again, no nasal decongestant beyond 4-5 days. ...Read more

Is inflammation of the nasal septum lining treated with medication or will saline rinses be the best?

Is inflammation of the nasal septum lining treated with medication or will saline rinses be the best?

Nasal sprays: Inflammation of the nasal mucosa or lining is best treated with a topical nasal steroid spray like flonase, nasonex, (mometasone) etc. These nasal steroid sprays take some time (months) to work and should be used every day, not just for a week or two. Additionally, nasal saline sprays will help by keeping the nasal lining moist because dryness can cause more inflammation. Think about a humidifier at night. ...Read more

Pls can u advice me what are medications, used for nasal vestibulitis?sometimes, septum bleeds, has white patches, tried bactroban without much benefit

See ENT: If there is a permanent white patch which fails to heal and bleeds often, one needs to consider cancer. I recommend that you contact an ENT ASAP. Be sure also that you are aiming your Nasonex away from the septum otherwise it will likely cause bleeding. Aiming nasal steroid at the septum theoretically may lead to monilial infection (transient white patches) although I have never seen it. ...Read more

Had migraines w/aura since 7yrs old, right pupil dilation & have a headache daily. No medication had helped. What could cause this?

The migraine aura: Is a neurosensory disturbance that includes a series of idiopathic, recurring neurologic symptoms that develop gradually over a 5-20 minute period and last less than an hour. An aura that lasts more than 60 minutes may be indicative of more serious pathology. As the aura abates there may be a pain-free interval. Take your medication before the headache occurs at aura end.

What's the best OTC medication for nasal congestion due to sinusitis infection?

What's the best OTC medication for nasal congestion due to sinusitis infection?

Just the opposite: Sinusitis or inflammation of the paranasal sinuses (there are 4 paired sinuses) does not cause nasal congestion. The opposite is true. That is, nasal congestion leads to sinus inflammation. It is true that they very often occur together, but the nasal congestion is the first event. Otc treatment may include saline (salt water) irrigations of the nose, a netti-pot and a decongestant. ...Read more
