Is children's sudafed with just Phenylephrine for nasal decongestant safe for almost 4yr old? I know Phenylephrine is ok for 2+yrs. 33#, dob 9/30/11

Not necessary: Mild upper respiratory infections are self limited illnesses. Decongestants such as phenylephrine only treat the symptoms, not the illness itself and all medications have potential side effects. It's better to use normal saline nasal drops or spray. If fever recurs, lethargy appears, decreased apetite, worsenning cough or other complications, have him seen by a doctor. ...Read more

I take regular sudafed but its only unclogging one nostril. Are there any other nasal decongestants that are non drowsy?

Yes: The best decongestants are inhaled intranasal steroids and they are recommended for allergies. Sudafed is ok short term, the over the counter version "Afrin" can potentially cause rebound increased congestion. If this is chronic congestion, you should probably see a physician for Rx for intranasal steroids. They are non drowsy. ...Read more

I am experiencing severe nasal congestion. I'm very prone to sinus infections. Can I take phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine together to max results?

According: According to drugs. Com, there are no listed interactions between Coricidin and pseudoephendrine. However, some formulations of either one depending on brand can contain acetaminophen. You may want to double check your medications to see if they contain Acetaminophen and the amount so you are not taking too much if you take boths meds together. Also, if it's been 2 weeks and you are not any better, you should consider seeing your doctor to make sure you don't have a sinus infection causing your prolonged symptoms. Good luck! ...Read more

Took a decongestant that included 200 mg ibuprofen and 30 mg pseudoephedrine, can I also take my usual 10 mg ambien (zolpidem)?

Not recommended: Ambien (zolpidem) doesn't cause restful sleep. You can wake up groggy and tired. If you're taking ibuprofen, you must have food in your stomach in order to prevent gastritis or a stomach ache. Also since you're taking pseudoephedrine, that could keep you up all night. That's only indicated for very short term use. So taking Ambien (zolpidem) would not help if you're also taking it all together. ...Read more

It Depends: Unfortunately, there are mult versions of Nyquil. Some contain the active ingredient in Sudafed (usually actually Sudafed PE which is phenylephrine). Other's do not. When it comes to OTC the counter meds it is as confusing and dangerous as if not more than prescriptions meds. Steroids: I would recommend either Medrol dose-pak or Prednisone 20 mg. Three times a day for 5 days. Prednisone is the ultimate anti-inflammatory drug and the above 2 methods of administration are safe and should relieve rebound congestion. Obviously, stop taking over the counter nasal sprays.
