I have diverticulitis. Was hospitalized for a week. After 2 weeks I see white mucus in my stool. I also have narrowing in my colon. Do I require surgery?

Diverticulitis: Usually gets managed with anitibiotics, as you have been. Ciprofloxacin and Flagyl are drugs of choice and patietns do get better with antibiotics and supportive care. When it doesn't get better than surgery is indicated. At 58 yo maybe its time for a follow up colonoscopy if you haven't had one already. ...Read more

The colon is another term for the large intestine. This is the final portion of the digestive system, responsible for absorbing water and storing stool before evacuation. It is divided into sections described as cecum; ascending, transverse, descending and ...Read more

Both need evaluation: The narrowing can be due to inflammation or malignancy and needs to evaluated by colonoscopy. The lung nodule also needs to be followed if you're a nonsmoker or perhaps even biopsied if you are. It can represent scar, inflammation, or malignancy. ...Read more

Colonoscopy: Colonoscopy, that you planning, should settle the issue.
Wish you good health!
Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Practice safe sex, if you have sex. ...Read more

What does fold thickening and narrowing of mid decending colon suggest. Seen on X-ray. Scheduled colonoscopy a week from now. Freaked out?

Do not freakout, yet: In a 30 year old, it is very uncommon to see colon Cancer. So it may simply be a misreading, yet a colonoscopy examiantaion will clarify what is going on there, if anything.
Why did have an examination in the first place? What test was done and why? Do you have any abdominal symptoms? These pieces of History are essential to know. ...Read more

Do narrow stools always indicate colon cancer?

No: More commonly due to spasm in lower colon. However, sudden change in stool caliber, "pencil thin" stools, cramps, bleeding, nausea, weight loss need evaluation. Ongoing symptoms need evaluation. At the least, this should involve a doctor visit, perhaps other tests. ...Read more

Tmy ct scan said I have narrowing in my transverse colon. What is this?

Needs investigation: This could represent a normal colonic contraction, an area of inflammation or sometimes could reflect a colon cancer. Go see a gastroenterologist to determine whether colonoscopy is warranted or have your imaging further reviewed. ...Read more

I am so confused. I have had abdo ct scan for upper abdo pain. Said I have 'narrowed transverse colon'. If I had mass in the colon would it say 'mass'?

I don't blame you: For being confused. It's difficult to determine a "narrowed transverse colon" with an abdominal CT. Usually a fair bit of oral contrast, enough to distend the bowel (like with a CT enterography) is needed to determine the caliber of the transverse colon. That finding wouldn't necessarily be consistent with upper abdominal pain. A more detailed history would be helpful. ...Read more

What can cause a pseudo narrowing of colon? And what would be the treatment? Fiber supplements cause more mucus in stool and irritate me more.

Hard to say: Hi JonT,
Sorry to hear that you have been feeling poorly. I think this is a topic better discussed in depth with your primary physician. "Pseudo narrowing" is a little bit of an ambiguous term and requires some clarification from your doctor as to what exactly they mean when they say pseudo-narrowing. Further testing may be needed to determine if you have an actual stricture. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Ct scan shows diverticulitis Gi advised sigmoidoscopy to check narrowing of colon could it be cancer as been told only scoping can confirm difference?

Unfortunately those: Two conditions can look similar on the CT scan. Another option is to treat for diverticulitis, then repeat the CT scan to see if the abnormality has resolved. If you don't have symptoms of diverticulitis, you should have the sigmoidoscopy. ...Read more

28 yrs old, male. Do narrow stools always indicate colon cancer or are there other reasons? No blood in stool. Bloating and gas.

No – but what's up?: And narrowed caliber of stool can be commonly associated with colon carcinoma in any age group. It relates to the relative constriction of the rectum prior to evacuation. Other conditions include rectal stenosis, a sizable rectal polyp, or other conditions serving to narrow and constricted the normal sized stool. Best let a gastroenterologist evaluate you by colonoscopy and anoscopy. ...Read more

23. F No cancer history. Since 2 days inconsistency in BM. I go once a day but find hard to release. Lil narrow stools. Got gas. No blood Colon cancer?

Unlikely: A diagnosis of cancer of the intestines at 23 yr of age is very unusual. If you are constipated and there is larger piece of stool blocking passage of stool, this may cause thinner stools. Try to have more fiber in your diet and stay hydrated. ...Read more

What size are colon tumours typically that are causing symptoms, such as narrow stools? Can they still be quite small?

Miscommunication: I think you are confusing your terms here. What you are describing sounds like an anal stricture/stenosis. An anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the anus. These are two totally different processes with different treatments. I would clarify with your physician what it is you have exactly. Strictures can initially be treated with dilation. ...Read more

Yes, but unlikely: With the changes in your stool and symptoms, it would be very important to get in and be evaluated. It sounds like you need a colonoscopy and stool studies. Chance that 4 CT scans over 2 1/2 years would all miss sympotomatic colon cancer (narrow stool, occasion blood), also sigmoidscope to 35 cm.

Fairly high risk: CT scans are NOT good tools for looking inside the bowel. Endoscopy is the preferred tool, but a sigmoidoscopy, at its best, misses looking at half the colon. A look to merely 35 cm has missed about 85-90% of the colon. The usual method to evaluate the colon is a complete colonoscopy. ...Read more
