Narrow Palate (Overview)

Some people have a narrow tall palate. Some times this is a genetic tendency. Sometimes it's as a result of oral habits as a child is growing. The tongue presses right behind the front teeth and rolls back stimulating the palate to grow laterally. Children that only press their tongue forward or have a digit sucking habit, don't stimulate the needed growth laterally. This is treated with ortho

Can you tell me what to do if I need them cause I have an impacted canine and a narrow palate. What are some things I should do before I get braces on?

What to do: It's very simple. First, find the best orthodontist in your area through recommendations of trusted individuals. Second, understand your options and what is planned and why. Third, if necessary go for a second and even third opinion with other orthodontists. Finally, go ahead with treatment with the doctor whom you trust the most and who makes the most sense in what he\she is recommending. ...Read more

Wide tongue and narrow palate fix for adult?

Wide tongue and narrow palate fix for adult?

No need to fix: A narrow palate usually doesn't have to be fixed unless it causes a problem with the bite (the way the teeth come together). If there is a malocclusion problem, this is fixed by the orthodontist using braces usually. The tongue will then not seem so wide. It is very rare for an adult to need tongue reduction surgery. ...Read more

Will metal spacers and braces with a wire help expand my narrow palate?

Will metal spacers and braces with a wire help expand my narrow palate?

Absolutely not: Spacers make room between teeth for placement of metal bands on back teeth. Braces ; wires align teeth. At 37 the 2 halves of your upper jaw have fused to each other ; to the other bones in your skull. Palatial expansion therefore mandates an expansion appliance + jaw surgery. See a qualified orthodontic specialist and inquire about "sarp.". ...Read more

Narrow Palate, tongue resting on molars because of size, stuffy nose (not runny) and frothy saliva. Can it be all related and be treated?

Narrow Arch: Patients with a narrow maxillary arch (and high palatal vault) often have upper airway problems. Mouth breathing can have adverse effects on facial growth. At this stage you should consult with an oral surgeon and orthodontist to determine what treatment options you have to correct your malocclusion and allow for better breathing.

Can you tell me if braces help extend narrow palates?

Can you tell me if braces help extend narrow palates?

During growth yes: During growth (males up until age 15 and females 12), skeletal expansion of palate is possible. But beyond those ages (with a great degree of individual variation), the skeletal structure of the upper jaw won't change unless with jaw surgery. The arch form can be modified though to some extent as teeth can be pushed out a bit in narrow arches with braces, with limitations and potential relapse ...Read more

Can your upper jaw shift back to being narrow after a palate expander treatment as a teenager if you don't wear your retainers for braces?

Can your upper jaw shift back to being narrow after a palate expander treatment as a teenager if you don't wear your retainers for braces?

Depends: Some palatal expanders produce more stability than others. Retainers prevent teeth from shifting, but if underlying bone is not the appropriate size/shape, tooth movement can appear exaggerated. I assume you're asking the question because you have noticed some movement. Best to return to your Orthodontic Specialist, the professional that knows you best, for reevaluation before serious relapse. ...Read more
