I'm scheduled to have surgery soon. Is there any way that I can find out in advance the names of every medication I'll be receiving? Who do I contact?

No way: Unfortunately, there is no way on predict which medications you will need, and even those that are common are given by different doctors. Anesthesia specifically is not uniform among anesthesiologists. Best to share your concerns with your surgeon before you get to the hospital. They should be able to ease your mind, and let you know more about the local process. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Why aren't prescription medications prepared in advance? Why do pharmacies prepare them? How do they have the training to do so? I thought they simply require you to have a prescription and simply sell you the medicine and that is it?

Some: Some prescriptions (such as liquid suspensions) need to be mixed when you pick them up because they will lose strength a couple weeks after the water is added. Other times pills need to be counted. In all cases an individual label needs to be generated with your specific instructions and the pharmacist needs to verify that the medication is not something you are allergic to or something that you can't take with your other medications. ...Read more

What is a tnf agent? Please list some examples of this medication? Thanks dr's in advance.

TNF Drugs: A tnf inhibitor is a pharmaceutical drug that suppresses response to tumor necrosis factor (tnf), which is part of the inflammatory response. My nephew is in advanced stages of Crohn's disease. He has had many treatments including ramicade. Are there any new medications for him?

Several: There are several other drugs beside remicade (infliximab). However the first question is whether he needs his Remicade (infliximab) dosing optimized. Sometimes adding a second medicine on top of the Remicade (infliximab) can be beneficial. Finally there are several alternative drugs including adalimumab, certulizumab, mercaptopurine, and methotrexate. ...Read more

Can a low TSH completely prevent pregnancy? Not extremely low but median low. Can the medication alap have an effect? Thanks in advance

Thyroid problem: Decrease TSH may be a result of primary disease of pituitary gland causing secondary hypothyroidism or it may be a consequence of negative feed back of elevated thyroid hormone (T4) in thyrotoxicosis. How does taking anti-inflammatory steroid medication affect the outcome of vision correction surgery? My rheumatoid arthritis requires me to take steroid medication to keep it under control. I would like to have vision correction surgery for advanced myop

How does taking anti-inflammatory steroid medication affect the outcome of vision correction surgery? My rheumatoid arthritis requires me to take steroid medication to keep it under control. I would like to have vision correction surgery for advanced myop

Unfortunately,: Unfortunately, rheumatoid arthritis is an absolute contraindication for laser vision correction. In fact, anyone with an autoimmune condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis is not considered a candidate for laser vision correction at this time. If you are considering vision corrective surgery, your best option would be a refractive lens exchange given your condition, but you would need to be evaluated by an eye surgeon to establish your candidacy for this procedure. ...Read more

Hi I would like to know how can I go about getting a drug test? I am trying to prove to my boyfriend that I don't do drugs and he said if I did this it would prove it thanks in advance.

Agree w/colleagues: Only you know the answer to whether or not you do illicit drugs. A bigger issue you didn't ask about is whether getting the drug testing will really improve your relationship with your BF. In my opinion- doing the drug test doesn't PROVE anything other than having or not drugs in your system NOW. Do you believe THAT single result will create lasting trust in your BF? Think about it. ...Read more

I'm using allergan (combigan and ganfort) for an advanced glaucoma. Are these the best drugs for treating glaucoma, or are there better ones?

Glaucoma: Both combigan and ganfort are combination drops. Both contain timolol which would be unnecessary duplicate therapy with potential for side effects. This maybe something to address with your eye doc. However, it is often difficult to suggest alternatives in advanced glaucoma if a regimen is already working for you...a sort of ' don't fix what's not broken' approach. Good luck ...Read more

I was diagnosed with HIV last month. I will start antiviral drugs today. Is it be ok if I take spirulina with the drugs? Thanks in advance.

Sure: Don't expect any benefit. Spirulina is an old health fraud. I am very glad you are getting treated for your HIV infection. If you are interested in complementary therapies, find an evidence-based holistic physician in your community. He/she won't recommend spirulina. ...Read more

I have a relative suffering from emphysema, there’s no effective drugs in China. Whether the US have more advanced and effective treatment or drugs?

Depends: Good evening,

Treatment of emphysema is varied and depends on the severity of the disease. Treatment may include just an inhaled bronchodilator, and escalate to include inhaled and oral steroids. At the most advanced stages there are quite a few agents, including supplemental oxygen. You may need to first determine the stage of your loved ones disease. Good luck. ...Read more

Does methocarbonol show up on a drug screen? Also it is a urine test but its a new machine they pour it into that is really advanced

Not on a screen: It is a mild muscle relaxant with little or no abuse potential, and am not sure why you are worried about it, particularly if it is prescribed for you. I have not seen any false positives with it, and am not aware of any reports, although you can find hundreds of people asking about it If you tested for something on a screening test, they should be doing confirmatory tests, which will settle it. ...Read more

A patient with 5-year history of Parkinson's disease, takes no drug treatment. Is there any advanced treatment protocol to this condition in the US?

Sort of: We have some newer forms of L-DOPA, like Duodopa, and Rytary, and Deep Brain Stimulation seems to be used earlier and in more patients, but otherwise, not any profound advances, so far. However, loads of research programs under supervision of some outstanding Movement Disorder Specialists. If you are available, there may be some areas of benefit to consider. ...Read more

How long does it take to get narco/lortab to be conpletely out of ur system for a drug screen. And without a drug screen. A really advance urine testi?

How long does it take to get narco/lortab to be conpletely out of ur system for a drug screen. And without a drug screen. A really advance urine testi?

Lortab elimination?: Lortab (hydrocodone and acetamenophen) is a pain med. The hydrocodone component has a 1/2 life of 8hrs. That means every 8 hrs, 1/2 of the drug should be eliminated in ur urine. If u have a problem with opiate pain medication, it's best to be honest with your doc & get the help u need. Be careful, as Lortab also contains tylenol, (acetaminophen) an overdose of which can cause liver failure and death. Talk 2 ur MD ...Read more

Taking cymbalta, lyrica, (pregabalin) dilaudid and oxycontin for avn and peripheral neuropathy any ideas on drug changes or resistances? Thank you in advance.

Taking cymbalta, lyrica, (pregabalin) dilaudid and oxycontin for avn and peripheral neuropathy any ideas on drug changes or resistances? Thank you in advance.

See neurologist.: I recommend that you have to cut back on the Oxycontin and Dilaudid because they are not just addictive but eventually you need to use more to achieve the degree of pain control you have. The Cymbalta and Lyrica (pregabalin) have been used a lot for chronic pain which is also experienced in pn. I would suggest that you consider other pain control besides the opiates for a long term basis through a pain clinic. ...Read more

What is best pain medication?

There are none...: Even the strongest opiates only "take the edge off" for people in chronic pain. Meds are only one part of dealing with the pain. A useful tool, but pain is so necessary for survival that we are not "allowed" to monkey with it much. In acute pain, the transition from miserable to less miserable can be great. In chronic pain, it's just part of the plan. ...Read more

Please describe the medication: topical?

Applies to skin: Topical just refers to how a medication is applied. In this case to the skin and is meant to treat local skin problems.
