What is the best otc, non-ppi antacid (i.E. Malox, mylanta, pepto bismol, tums, (calcium carbonate) rolaids, etc.)?
Acid reduction...: Non-ppi acid reducers include the h2-blocker class (tagamet=cimetidine; zantac=ranitidine; pepcid=famotidine) as well as antacids (like maalox, mylanta, tums, (calcium carbonate) etc.). The former reduce production of acid while the latter neutralize stomach acid. There are pros ; cons to each, so its not a question of which is best but which is best for you. How likely is aluminum poisoning from carafate (sucralfate)? I use prescription strength anti-persperent that contains aluminum also.
Not likely but ?: Sucrafate and Anti-perspirants both contain aluminum which is absorbed and stored in bodily tissues. Chronic may cause toxicity, most particularly for patients with chronic renal disease or who are on dialysis. I would advise switching to an anti-perspirant that doesn't contain aluminum such as Arm and Hammer. Ask your physician if there is an alternative to Sucrafate for your condition. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Diet pill: My philosophy is that the best way to lose weight is not by dieting or a pill, but by changing your lifestyle to a healthier one. You don't need a drastic diet. Make small changes. Eat the right portions, eat 3-5 small meals a day, cut back on carbs and sugars, increase lean protein/veggie/fruit/water intake, ; start doing some cardiovascular exercise. Most physicians wouldn't suggest a diet pill. ...Read more
Miralax (polyethylene glycol): I would start with a 1/2 of a capful of the MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) (1/2 of the 17gram dose) in 8 ounces of fluid once a day. If that doesn't work after a few days, you may need to increase the dose (either give 1 capful or give the 1/2 capful dose twice a day). If you get too much response- very watery stools >4/day, back down to the lowest dose that seems to help. ...Read more

Is there any over-the-counter acid reflux medicine stronger than Pepcid (famotidine) complete and prilose otc?
Sure...: Pepcid (famotidine) is an H2 blocker. That class of drugs relative to acid suppression is exceeded by the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class, of which Prilosec was the first. Many subsequent PPI's have been introduced with longer durations of action. Although we can't endorse particular products on HealthTap, ask your pharmacist to recommend another PPI. Better yet, see your gastroenterologist for the right Rx. ...Read more
Can I give my 10 yr old 60lb son effervescent antacid & pain reliever it contains 325mg of aspirin,1000mg of citric acid&1916mg of sodium bicarbonate?
No!: Simplistically viewed, milk contains fat that delays the stomach emptying food and acid, calcium that stimulates release of gastrin (a hormone that revs up acid production), and the bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) stresses your kidneys. If an ulcer has been diagnosed, please take the acid blocker prescription your physician likely recommended. ...Read more
