An ulnar or radial collateral ligametn injury can be partial requiring immobilization or it may be completely torn often requiring surgery. I fell and hurt my thumb. I'm unable to grasp tightly and the base of the thumb is swollen. I can move the thumb around however. What should I do?

I fell and hurt my thumb. I'm unable to grasp tightly and the base of the thumb is swollen. I can move the thumb around however. What should I do?

Should consult doc: It is is possible that you only sustained a significant contusion/sprain to your hand from the fall, but injury to/at the base of the thumb is a bit concerning for a scaphoid bone fracture. Fracture of other bones in the hand is not as concerning because of the unique blood-supply here : fracture across this bone severs the blood supply. Thus, I recomend seeing doc for an eval/treatment. Good luck. ...Read more

Could be infection: The most common thing to happen there would be infection. Ingrown nail is also possible, and it would feel better to lift your nail off the red area if it were from an ingrown nail. It is possible that we can handle this problem on HealthTap. Com if we can see a picture of your thumb. Or you can see your doctor or urgent care center. ...Read more

My left thumb is swollen, stiff, painful to move and painful to touch. Started 2 days ago and is progressively getting worse. Not broken or dislocated?

See doctor: Considering the symptoms you describe, it is possible you have an infection of your nailbed, which could be spreading - also known as "paronychia". You should see a doctor ASAP to get evaluated, as it may require antibiotics or drainage, and could get worse without it. In the meantime, apply warm soaks to your thumb at least 3x/day.
