My bowel movement after lapro is not normal. Stools are very hard and I don't pass fully. I pass thrice to empty my bowels. Please help to be normal.
I've had problems w/ hard stools for a few years now & even when I changed up diet, it persisted but I don't chew my food all the way, could that be y?
I don't think so...: Chronic constipation can be managed with diet and medications. Low residue foods can cause hard stools. I would suggest, at least 64 oz. Water per day, dried apricots 6 halves, with lunch everyday until regulated. Alternatively a packet of MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) in the am as part of a balanced breakfast. The other aspect to remember is to make a concerted effort to stool daily when the urge moves you-don't wait. ...Read more

Too much fat: Floating smelly stools are a sign of fat in the stool. This can result from poor digestion of fat in food, eg from a lack of an enzyme called lipase, which is made by the pancreas. There are several causes for this and you should see a gastrointestinal specialist if this continues. Can also try switching to a low fat diet for a couple of days to see what happens. ...Read more
Is it normal for a stool to be too hard to pass and then the next day it comes out easily and it's soft?
It depends upon food you ate. If you had same food then it should be pretty much same otherwise it would be of concern.

Hard, formed stool mixed with very soft stool coming out at the same time in output. What is going on/what could be the cause?
Encopresis: Encopresis results in stool backup behind the very hard and obstructing stool. Sometimes liquid or soft stool will "leak around the hard stool obstruction" giving the stool output that you describe. Treatment is disimpaction with enemas followed by stool softeners to prevent new imaction from occurring. ...Read more
I'm having really soft BM's, but there are really hard pellet ahaped stools mixed in. I often have a feeling of an incomplete BM.
My stool is always thick heavy pasty but soft but it's still hard to pass. What can I do to get my stool to become more light and loose?
Fiber, fluids & exer: I don't know about making your stool "more light" but you can't argue against fiber, fluid & exercise to keep from being constipated. Ideally, you'd get your fiber from your foods but there are also fiber supplements available along w/stool softeners, too. Don't worry about consistency as long as you don't have to strain. Check w/your doc re need for colonoscopy (low risk vs high). ...Read more
Lately I always feel like I need to go to the toilet, but I can't go properly. My stools aren't hard, they just won't come out properly! Help?
Get checked: A change in bowels should be checked if they don't normalize with easy treatment. Multiple possible explanations exist. I would first increase your dietary fiber to 30 grams daily along with 60-70 oz of water daily. Fiber one cereal is a nice option to increase your fiber. A colonoscopy is suggested to rule out any significant problem within the colon ...Read more
I had a one off hard, dark stool. I'm not sure if it was black but should I be concerned as it was a once off? I'm 21 and in otherwise good health?
Altered color stool: Color of stool varies with foods, speed of emptying of the GI tract, medications ; supplements ingested, gut flora (may vary per individuall), additives (like blood), subtractions (like absent bile), infection/exposures, inflammation, ; other factors. My stool was big and hard very dark colour but when I wiped it and stuff the marks were brown. Was stool just very dark brown? Eaten lots of chocolate
Black, tarry stool?:
If the stool is black and like hot tar consistency, it's possible that there is blood in the stool.
Stool color varies dramatically with what foods you've eaten, dyes that may have been in processed food or in your case maybe even very large quantities of dark chocolate. ...Read more

GI workup: This is not an uncommon problem and does not necessarily mean there is severe disease. It may have to do with what your health has been like and what meds you are on. Tips: Stay well hydrated (at least 8 - 8 ounces glasses of water per day). Try to get in 5 servings of vegetables and 4 servings of fruit per day – get that fiber in. My 10 y.O. Complais that its hard to get his stool out. Is there a childrens laxative to soften it?
No laxative: There is a huge difference between laxatives and stool softeners. First, increase the fiber in child's diet and how much water child drinks daily. If you have tried this and stool still hard, then stool softeners such as MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) can be helpful. Steer clear of actual laxatives - these can cause more problems than they solve. ...Read more
