My son have a productive cough and a running nose?

See advice below.: Use saline nose drops and suction the mucus from the nose as often as needed (if he can blow his nose, do that after saline drops). Also, elevate the head of the crib or bed. If your doctor ok's it, use a humidifier in the room during sleep. Cold and cough meds are proven not to help and can cause severe side effects. If these actions don't help enough, he needs to see his doctor. ...Read more

I have stopped smoking now for 4 days and have developed a cough with a lot of phlegm also a runny nose and sneezing a lot so what would help?

THIS IS NORMAL: and congrats on quitting. Our respiratory system is lined with cells that contain tiny hairs that produce mucus which is designed to keep our air passages clear of particles, pollution and assorted other junk we breathe in. Tobacco smoke paralyzes these cells, but when you quit, they start working again to clean out all the junk. These symptoms are signs of a good thing. Stay hydrated & stay quit. ...Read more

My three year old daughter has had a persistent dry cough and minimal runny nose without a fever.

Possible allergies.: If your daughter is having recurrent symptoms with out fevers and signs of acute infection she is most likely having recurrent allergic symptoms. I would rec using saline nose drops for nasal hygiene. Take some loratidine otc, and look for signs of improvement. If nothing changes in 3-4 weeks then talk to your pediatrician. ...Read more

Stuffy nose: Unfortunately there are no longer over the counter cold medication for infants and toddlers. . . . You can try giving him menthol baths using johnson and johnson, menthol baby wash, you can use vicks rub as long as he is wearing a tshirt to avoid rubbing his eyes. Also the vicks vaporizing mentholated pads work well when placed under a crib . If he has a fever, see your doctor. ...Read more

Cold Medications: This is not as simple as it may seem.Your best resource would be your local pharmacist. Most OTC cold medications are ok, but some can interact with medications some people are on. Best to inquire with the local pharmacist who knows what medications you are on.He/She will be able to guide you to the right OTC medications! ...Read more

My 5 year old has a cough, runny nose and hoarse voice should she see the doctor?

NotNecessarily: If your child is otherwise acting okay, and staying hydrated it is fine to observe. Persistent sore throat, if fever lasts more than 3 days, of the color of the mucus changes, if any shortness of breath/wheezing/distress occurs then you need to take them to their doctor or the ED. ...Read more

Probable bronchitis.: You probably have bronchitis. If you have only a low-grade fever, it is probably viral so antibiotics are not useful. If your symptoms are improving, you would need symptomatic relief only and you should see it resolve over the next few days. If your symptoms are worsening, see your doctor. You could also have residual bronchospasm best treated w/ inhalers that your doc can prescribe. ...Read more

Probably a cold: The common cold is the likely explanation but if the problem persists or worsens, see your pediatrician. In the meanwhile, honey may possibly help his cough (cough medicine does not seem to work in children) and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may possibly reduce his runny nose. The duration of cold symptoms should not exceed 10 days however. ...Read more

Not approved: Most medications and herbs are not appropriate or FDA approved for infants, and dosing cannot be safely advised. Increasing humidity and keeping your baby well hydrated may lessen the symptoms and to support the body as it heals itself. Prolonged symptoms of fever, cough and congestion should be evaluated by your pediatrician and may require further treatment. ...Read more

If I have a sometimes runny nose and a sometimes stuffy nose with sneezing and a raspy throat. Would that be considered a cold?

If I have a sometimes runny nose and a sometimes stuffy nose with sneezing and a raspy throat. Would that be considered a cold?

Rhinitis: What you have is consistent with rhinitis with post nasal drip. Frequent sneezing spells make it likely due to allergy to aero allergens or environmental allergies. Common cold is rhinitis due to viral infection where there are too many viruses to be tested for. If this recurs often, you should see an allergist to check out if it is due to environmental allergies so you would get proper treatment. ...Read more

I sympathise...: I had that type of cough after christmas 2012. My back even ached from all the coughing. I took mucinex-dm mainly for the dextromethorphan hydrobromide, which is a cough suppressant. It is inexpensive and worked wonders for me! take the maximum recommended dose until your cough tones down. ...Read more
