Depends: His age and health? Most lumps in the neck of children are the result of a throat infection. Once enlarged they can persist for a long time. Adults with lumps are different than children. In adults, smoking, & other factors increase the risk of cancers. If the lump is rubbery & growing, then it should be rechecked. Depends: It is not unusual for kids to get some swelling in the lymph nodes in the side of the neck during a cold. We call this "reactive adenopathy" The tenderness concerns me however. Likely a lymph node: There are many pea sized lymph nodes located in the tissues of the neck & they are prominent when they overly muscles. They can enlarge when stimulated by bug bites on the surrounding skin or illness or throat drainage. Lymph Node: This is probably a lymph node within the cervical chain in the neck. These commonly pop up to fight colds and upper respiratory infections. I believe this is unrelated to the fact he is on antidepressants.
