My 7 year old son grinds his teeth in sleep during night. What could be the cause?

Stress: Believe it or not, small children experience stress in their lives just as we do. The most common reason to grind the teeth is stress related. However, another cause is due to eruption of teeth. This could be a normal body response to dealing with the change in the bite as they lose baby teeth and get adult teeth. Take him to an orthodontist for an exam to know for sure. Check out www.Braces.Org. ...Read more

My son just turned 3 and he grind his teeth while he sleep, is that normal?

My son just turned 3 and he grind his teeth while he sleep, is that normal?

Yes: Unfortunately for the parents, it is very common. Sounds terrible and worrisome, but is common. Check to be sure he has not chipped any teeth from this. He should be seen by a pediatric dentist now to check his mouth and teeth and to get him used to seeing the dentist -- especially when it is new and easy and fun. Important to see the pedodontist, not the family (general) dentist ...Read more

Pediatric Neurologis: If possible I would recommend that you see a Pediatric Neurologist that can fully evaluate your son and develop a treatment plan. If this is not possible outside of the States, it may be appropriate for you to come to a Childrens medical center here for a thorough evalution. A diagnosis is a first step, a comprehensive care plan would be the ultimatley goal however. ...Read more

See your doctor: I think your son should be seen by his doctor. If an infant is not gaining weight, this can be a big problem. Your son's doctor can check his growth curve and evaluate his daily food intake to see if your son needs further evaluation. ...Read more

Limit damage: Grinding at night (aka nocturnal bruxism) can be related to sleep disorders, medications, stress, infection and other conditions. Night guards do not "stop" grinding. Instead, they are used to limit the damage to the teeth and tm joints caused by the grinding. A properly fitted, well-made night guard will not interfere with breathing, swallowing, sleeping and, to some extent, speech. ...Read more

Teething care: If you are convinced that his symptoms are due to teething and not any illness, need to feed more etc, then i would try an oral dose of Acetaminophen for pain relief. Most of the topical treatments are ineffective as you have found out. Make sure you give a full dose of the medication based on your child's weight, not on age. Contact doc if need help figuring out dose or let me know child's weight. ...Read more
