My sister has hep c genotype 1. Just got it her viral load is very low. What are some holistic things she could do to keep it low?
No alcohol: Avoid any alcohol and avoid getting coinfected with hiv. The immune system works to control the virus so avoiding stress, eating healthy and no tobacco or any drugs may also help. Low viral loads should help lead to higher cure rates with antiviral treatment when she is ready. Low viral load does not predict slower rate of scarring (fibrosis). ...Read more
My sister is hep c postive genotype 1 can you get two strands of hep c? After she was infected, she shared needles with someone who also has hep c.
Yes: People can get multiple strains of hepatitis c, although usually we only detect one to two different genotypes at a time. It is unclear whether multiple strains have any impact on liver disease, but treatment is driven by the hardest to treat genotype in the mix. So if someone had a mix of genotypes 1 and 2 they would be treated as a 1. Lots of other reasons not to share needles like hiv. ...Read more
Hep c anti algorithm test was reactive, but did not show s/co ratio. Nurse claims it's "high reactive" but could not give the cutoff value. All labs have a s/co value why did this not. Was the nurse incorrect? she just said it was high w/o a ratio?
Does not add up: There is no Hep c anti algorithm test. If you got the actual test result, it should have the name and contact information of the laboratory that did the test and you may wish to contact the laboratory for an explanation.
